For Win7/8 to read and send MKV, the underlying DLNA Digital Media Server needs to know how to read and advertise the MKV format.

The Xbox One October update only affects the console, and not your Windows PC.

While the Windows Media Player can be setup as a DNLA Server (via "Turn on media streaming.."), your version of Windows is not able to read and advertise MKV as media available to the Xbox One. As pointed out in the thread, you'll need a DLNA server on your
    media PC.

Without endorsing one DLNA server software over another, this is a good thread to read to understand the required steps:

In case you need it, this is the full Xbox MKV support article:

What media server are you using to stream to the XBox One? I have tried Plex, XBMC, TVersity, TWonky and even Windows Media Player and the xbox one sees the servers and folders but says they are empty. Just wondering if' I'm not using a supported DLNA server.
    HELP Please.

  3. I have the icons on my Win7 Machine with the Windows Media Player Icon. It knows they are videos and when I click on them on Win7 they play through WMP.

  4. Media Player Not showing MKV files.

OK I used the servio server suggested above, and now I can see the .mkv files on the xbox one. They do not play, but at least I can see them now.

  5. I am having the same issue. MKV files are not appearing in the media player browser. All of the other files that I expect to be there are present except for the MKV files.

Is this an issue with only certain encodings being displayed? Wouldn't that just result in playback issues?

An official response would be great. I was really looking forward to the MKV streaming in the October update.

  6. Ok after doing the servio update and downloading a different set of that season that I was trying to find, I have found the files and at least one of them played.

  8. Media Player Not showing MKV files.

The windows media player only plays some files. I can't figure out why some are available and others are not. Its weird. Some mp4's work some don't. Same thing with avi. Mkv's don't work at all.

Media Player error 0xc00d36c4 streaming MKV from PC

Maybe someone could at least confirm for me whether this is even a use-case that is expected to work?Is it expected that you can stream MKV video using the Media Player app on Xbox One from a Win8.1 PC media library?

I have subsequently tried to re-pro the issue on a fresh build of Win8.1 on a different PC on my home network, using the same MKV files, and same Media Streaming options. In this case Media Player app on XB1 does not even list the MKV files within this media
library. Maybe this is the default behaviour instead?

On the PC hosting the MKV files with which the Media Player app gives error 0xc00d36c4, I once had some third-party MKV codecs installed (CCCP) so that I could watch MKVs in Media Player 12 for Windows 8. Once MS added MKV support to the Video app in Win8.1
I uninstalled these third-party codecs. Could this be the only reason that the Media Player app on XB1 sees the MKV files in this media library, and it isn't even supposed to?

I'm having the exact same problem as pAter above, all media files show up except MKV folders where it states "No Files Found."

None of this worked for me.

MKV files are not visible. And to restate...I CAN see all other media files.
