Media Player isn't always up to date on media files located on my network.

First, I should give a general description of my network setup:

I have a harddrive with media files plugged into my router. The xbox one plugs via Cat7 cable directly into the router.

When adding new files to the harddrive and then going into the Media Player to watch them, they don't always show up. I've checked permissions issues, codec issues, I've tried quitting the Media Player app and reopening it in hopes that it'll refresh the
media list, I've even tried hard shut off and unplug of my xbox one to try to see if it does the same, but for some reason, sometimes it just won't index new files. However, eventually they do show up. It could be minutes, hours, days. But eventually I'll
notice they're there. The interesting thing is that this only started in the past couple of weeks and I've had the same setup for couple years.

So did the media player app get updated and just indexes less frequently, or is it something completely different? Any ideas?

    :)

    File Sharing

The best way to share files is through Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center. I personally set up a library on Windows Media Player and then sync it to my network, which my Xbox 360 is connected to. This way it will play only what is in your library
and not just the C: folder.

Media Player error 0xc00d36c4 streaming MKV from PC

Maybe someone could at least confirm for me whether this is even a use-case that is expected to work?Is it expected that you can stream MKV video using the Media Player app on Xbox One from a Win8.1 PC media library?

I have subsequently tried to re-pro the issue on a fresh build of Win8.1 on a different PC on my home network, using the same MKV files, and same Media Streaming options. In this case Media Player app on XB1 does not even list the MKV files within this media
library. Maybe this is the default behaviour instead?

On the PC hosting the MKV files with which the Media Player app gives error 0xc00d36c4, I once had some third-party MKV codecs installed (CCCP) so that I could watch MKVs in Media Player 12 for Windows 8. Once MS added MKV support to the Video app in Win8.1
I uninstalled these third-party codecs. Could this be the only reason that the Media Player app on XB1 sees the MKV files in this media library, and it isn't even supposed to?

edere File Video su Pc sulla Xbox 360[Translation-E.O. Video Files on PC on Xbox 360]

The Xbox (and other media devices) don't access your media files directly. Instead they use something called DLNA, which requires your PC to have indexed your media library.

Then only the index is read by the Xbox (or other media players), and according to that index, you choose the files to play.

If you moved files around, or the index became corrupted, the Xbox can't find the media files anymore.

Please start the Windows Media player on your PC, and check that in that Media Player library, your media files are shown and are working correctly.

If the Media Player can't locate your media, the Xbox 360 can't get to the media as well.

Xbox One detecting folders but not files

I rectified this fault completely by chance.

Going into 'This PC' in the file explorer, you'll probably find the PC you're working on designated as a network location. I deleted this location, rebooted the PC, and BAM! The files now all appear in my media player.

Weird as hell i know, but it worked for me.

Does Xbox One Play MKV Video Files?

This is an old thread, very glad MS proved me wrong on this one. The media capabilities used to be a complete mess, now I havn't had a media file crash in over 4 months.

The native support for MKV is fantastic, it plays most formats within this container (forget about subtitles that aren't hardcoded though), even better than some .avi files - I use PLEX as a remote media server, although the media player app can also run
MKVs off a USB drive or from your networked media player library.

Not sure about DVD/BR support, in my experience the media player app is best utilised running over a network.
