    Media not playing on external drive


    I have a 5tb western digital my passport drive with roughly 3tb worth of video files on it.

    Some of the files play some dont on the default media player or VLC. If i copy the files that don't play on to another drive they play fine, so its not a file compatibility issue.

    Can anyone tell me what the issue is here and how to solve it.

    Why can't the ONE play the same media files as 360 ???

    Open the media player app. When you run the Media Player app, select your external USB drive, and then select the media that you want to play.

    Hi there.

    You should be able to play your media files from the drive - you just have to install Media Player app. When you run the Media Player app, select your external USB drive, then select the media that you want to play.

    Only be careful not to format the drive because that way all the data stored on it will be erased.

    The last post on this thread was in June 2014. A lot has changed in 11 months. The Xbox One will now happily play video from external devices in many formats (including MKV video) via external hard drives, Flash drives and from media servers.

    @GrowlingYapper I own a 4TB external HD that I use to play media off of on my Xbox 360. It was a bit of a pain getting it to recognize it as well as recognize it as a media player which are two totally different things. Do you know if a 4TB would work as
    a media player on an Xbox One. I plan on grabbing a one but want to use my external as a media drive and have no intentions of using it as a stroage for games, etc.

    No it's normal, you can install it on both media, but it will be the same. The console considers that you will be able to play it if the external hard drive is deconnected if you install the 2
