Maximum 360 Password Length Still Only 16 Characters???

I recently changed my Microsoft password because of a potential security breach. My new password is 18 characters long. Since I changed it, I have used my new password to log into xbox.com, bing.com, and microsoft.com on both my laptop and my phone, as well
as to log into Xbox Live through my Xbox One. For the first time since I changed my password, I tried to log into my Xbox 360 so that I could purchase something that hasn't been ported to the Xbox One yet. I expected to have to enter my new password, but I
did not expect the last two characters to be rejected by the login routine with the error code 8015D002.

A search of Xbox support returned instructions on workarounds, none of which were satisfactory. In addition, several other threads on this forum mention the 16-character limit on the 360 and indicated that anyone wishing to discuss the matter should start
a new thread (since, apparently, this topic goes back several years).

Please advise.

Exactly! The minimum and maximum password length ranges from 8 -12 characters for the Xbox 360 system.

What you could have tried though, were to try and enter only the first 12 characters of the total length of your password (xxxxxxxxxxxx).

Thanks for the info, I forgot App Specific Passwords applied to devices like the Xbox 360. I have it configured and working. Still, I find it a bit of a strange limitation, and although I know the 360 is "feature complete," hope the firmware team considers
changing the login prompt before the final firmware revision, whenever that may be.

 

The character limit on the Xbox 360 for a password is 16 characters. No change has been made to that and no announcements saying it will change have been made. There is feedback.xbox.com, I did find 1 post with that request.

If you up vote the request it will bring more light on the situation.

Alternatively, if you want to keep the longer password you can enable two step verification further increasing the security on your account. Just use the app password on the Xbox and your normal 16 character password elsewhere.

 

Thanks for your reply, but this is getting hilarious. Turning on two step verification did not provide the option to create or use an app password either through the website or on the 360; the security codes generated through the Microsoft Account phone
app didn't work either. And when I tried to go to the feedback page you linked to upvote the request you mentioned, the site refused to let me log in, only saying, "An error has occurred."

 

You say you have enabled Two Step Verification.

Please go to the
website for Account Security and check
this screenshot.

Make sure you're in the "Security & Privacy" section looking at the top right in the blue menu bar of the site.

Scroll further down to the section "Two-Step Verification", and check that it says "Your account is protected by two-step verification" like on the screenshot that I marked with a green border. Below, check that you are using "Identity verification apps".

Below that should be the section "App passwords" (again marked with a green border on the screenshot), with a link to "Create a new app password".

Click that link. Or try if this
direct link gets you to the App Password creation.

Since the Xbox 360 can't work with the Two Step Verification process (yet), you need to use this random letter password anyways.

Don't worry about security regarding the length or the password being letters only. The app password can NOT be used to sign into your account on the web, where you have to use your regular password together with your Two Step Verification App.

 

Thanks for that. For some reason, the first time I turned on two step verification, there was no option to create app passwords on that page (it was like I hadn't even turned verification on, but it said I had). So I turned verification off. This time, when
I activated it again, the app passwords option appeared. I'm now logged into my 360 with the app password. I still think Microsoft should update the system routines to allow passwords that work on other Microsoft services, though.

 

I recently changed my gamertag on xbox one and made a longer password now when I go to play a 360 backwards compatible game on xbox one it says I have to re download profile so my gamertag will change but my password for live is too long on 360
