Mandatory xbox 360 update made my console useless

I have an older (5 years) xbox 360 slim. I have an xbox live account and have always been signed in. We use the console with disk based games maybe once or twice a month. (mostly kinect games for my small kids to get some energy out). With Covid and staying
at home, we've been using it much more regularly. about two weeks ago the console said I had to take an update before I could play my disk game. The update always fails and gives a system error code that says to check my internet connect (the connection
is perfect). It won't let me play before the update is taken. I went on to xbox site to get some support and someone suggested taking the update through a USB. Tried that too but I still get the same error even when trying to load the updated from a USB drive.
This thing is basically just a brick now. Anything Else I can try to just play my disk games?

It could be that the hard drive is failing. The Xbox is unable to read the drive, thinks that it needs an update but the update will fail because the drive itself is failing. Your 360 might be dead basically.

There is an initial update that is mandatory. After that update, you can go offline.

Is that the Console update or game update? If it is the console update it is ok. But is there mandatory update for EVERY game purchased physically?

on your xbox 360 you need a profile, it can be linked to the account or not, on the 360 itself the profile is mandatory for it to start, on xbox one it only accesses the profile already made if it is linked to a microsoft account.

Anyways, unless they made Kinect's use in ME3 mandatory, there's no way I'm passing on this game. Sure, Kinect's still in 'gimmick' phase. So was the Wii way back when.
