Mandatory Install With Only 500GB

Who's the genius that made it so you have to install every game and then only give it 500GB, that's idiotic... Installs take almost an hour and you can only have roughly 10 games on the xbox at any given time, you can't freely switch game to game, this
is a step backwards from the 360... Once I fill up the memory, I'm not buying anymore games...

I'll be buying an external HDD soon too because I'm running out of room, 500GB just wasn't enough with mandatory installs, etc.

I find it baffling that you have to install games and they only give you 500gb. what were they thinking? so annoying. especially as some games give you a mandatory install for DLC that you may not want access to (BF4?).

You only get 365 GBs of HDD space, not 500 GBs after setting-up your console.

You only get around 700 something GBs of HDD space with the 1 TB HDD.

welcome to next gen, Bluray is not fast enough to run games off of the disc, so the X1 and PS4 have to fully install games to the hard drive, i imagine both consoles started off at 500gb to help keep the cost down. you'll want to buy a large external hard
drive (i got a nice 3tb off of Woot for $99), or sell your current console and wait another year or so for newer consoles with larger hard drives, or get the CoD:AW bundle console.

 

Blu-ray is fast enough to run a game off the disc. A 4x blu-ray drive has a faster data transfer rate than a DVD drive running at 12x.

The difference is that a blu-ray drive runs at a constant speed, it will always run at 4x (in this example). So while you can run a game off a blu-ray it isn't an ideal situation.

Plus hard drives are always going to be quicker than optical drives.

 

It also means less stress on the console.

I have xbox 360 and loading games is faster and my console makes less internal noise than if I didnt install disc games. You can however run games without installing on 360.

Games sizes on xbox 1 however are much bigger and blu-ray drive may not be efficient enough to run the game solely off the disc. Also microsoft advises the console is not recommended to stand upright unlike 360 because of the type of bluray drive but with
ps4 you can stand it upright.

They also have external hdd support I have 12 xb1 games but only have 68gb left on my console. When xbox 360 first launched it only came with like 20gb storage they even still make 4gb skus.

 

Bluray lacks the seek time to out perform a hard drive, load times would end up being several minutes. Or at least that is what I've read in the past.

 

DVD can't outperform a hard drive either. You are always going to get better results reading off a hard drive than an optical drive.

The problem with the PS3 playing off a blu-ray drive was Sony going for a cheap 2x option, which was slower at data transfer than a DVD drive at full 12x read speed. Remember that the speed ratings for DVD and blu-ray don't mean the same thing.

Because the blu-ray drive is a constant speed Sony had two options for the PS3. Forced install or duplication of data. The latter meaning that if the game needed to reload the starting area, rather than go back to the beginning of the disc and having a huge
loading time, as you described. So say 1 was a hub area the game would be spaced out like this '1,2,1,3,1,4.' on the disc. This pretty much killed the extra disc space advantage of being on blu-ray in the first place.

Take the console offline. An online console
will try to stream in patches along with the regular disc install, thus slowing down the install.

You can have more. Depends on the size of the game.

For disc-based titles, it's no different.

You do realize you can buy an external 2TB USB 3.0 HDD for less than $100
that will allow you to install plenty of titles, correct?

 

The 500 GB user unassessable HDD is a joke. When people pointed out soon after X1 launh, they then began allowing external HDDs.

As for the optical drives 'not being able to keep up.¨ I dont buy that at all. For those who support such fanciful tales I say prove it! If you cant then I stand behind my theory that from both S and M tHe installing of games was meant 2B another form of
DRM.

 

Can you play games from a optical drive, of course you can. Are those drives as quick as a hard drive, no they are not.

There is technically no reason you can't run games from the optical drive in a PC either, you'll simply get far better performance from having a game installed onto a hard drive.

Games are getting larger in size and while they no doubt can be run from an optical drive, the loading times would become such to make games near unplayable.

 

What utter nonsense, you think slow installs is another type of digital rights management lol. The genius was keeping the costs down by not putting a high speed 1TB drive in the machine, instead waiting for them to come down in price a year later. External
drive is genius, take it anywhere - to a friends house plug in and play, put music and videos on one and use it for your laptop too. Need some more space plug up to 3 x 16Tb drives. That's genius. I have 2 x 2GB drives, games load faster, I have more space
then I know what to do with and I can unplug them and take them wherever I go. I mainly only take my movies and music drive.

 

The HDD is accessible though. I mean, you can't access certain things like your game saves or system files, but you can remove games/DLC. I've had my One since launch, have about 10 games installed and still have ~200 GB free. I always remove games I'm
done playing.
