Giving all the power to one company is a very dangerous proposition, google fibre is a bad idea IMO, you'd be better off lobbying the government for better national coverage and systems, the internet isn't going away it needs significant investment IMO.

I'm not suggesting we give everything over to Google Fiber - it's just that they're offering the best that there is right now. I wish other companies were trying to be more competitive with it instead of leeching off of other areas where Google Fiber isn't.
By that same token I wish Google Fiber was trying to be more aggressive in it's spread across various cities. Right now, IMO, the future of online is coming slower than it needs to be...

 

EnenDaveyBoy and A Blue Illusion are spot on. Telling someone what they should or shouldn't prioritize especially if you do not know them is condescending. If it was a friend giving sound advice that's different. Also different if it was a financial advisor
although they most likely couldn't afford it.

I think what the OP was talking about was having to pay an arm and a leg to his Internet provider if he goes over his limit which he most likely does with the amount of updates.

Maybe if your poor poor. But I think the average household can afford unlimited broadband home network Wi-Fi internet. Yes Updates and file sizes are a hell lot bigger than Xbox 360. But everything needs regular updates, your PC, your phone, etc. 21st century
technology just isn't perfect enough to run without Updates. I've had Xbox 1 since launch (2013) and the UI at launch was like 100x slower than the new Windows 10-like UI which Xbox 1 now has. Xbox 360 and Xbox 1 is fun, that's why at least 10 million people
are on Xbox 1 and at least 20 million people are on Xbox 360. Otherwise there's always other stuff like hanging with friends in town or go to the park or stuff. I saw one comment from last year said something like 'go play chess instead'.

I don't know what my generation would do if we didn't have the internet. When moving, we didn't have the internet for a few days because there was a muck up with the ISP. I was BORED. To me having the internet is just as important as living in a house with
electricity and phone and stuff. It also helps you look up stuff for assignments for school. It saves you going to the library or stuff which tend to be open only during the day. Mobile internet is very expensive. Open Wi-Fi hot spots do have certain security
issues as suppose to a WPA2 protected home network (though that too may have some vulnerabilities, it is less than hotspots with no password required to use it).

If you want to have fun, consider your circumstances. Even if your rock bottom poor, you can go to the park or beach on a sunny day.

 

@brandiesel Having said that companies that have data caps should be closed down after they are named and shamed. How can they have a data cap in such a digital age?

Yeah I have comcast cable, internet, and phone it used to be unlimited data and now they are trailing a 300gb data cap on us. I hate it because I busted through it last month without them even notifying me about them switching my unlimited data plan to only
300gb a month. They said that is more than enuff data for anyone a month. Now I have to pick and choose what games with gold that I actually want to download so that I don't bust through the 300gb data trail because if you do they will charge you and extra
$10 for every 50gb that you go over.

 

^^ That's ridiculous. It's all greed. It's all it is. Does every company in America have a data cap now? I used to use Verizon and it didn't have a cap but that was many years ago. I'm sure they saw a way to bleed money out of people as well of put a ceiling
on their usage.
