Assuming you are referring to xbox live gold memberships then the difference is price.

It's nearly always best to buy your gold memberships from a shop or online store as it's almost always cheaper than buying it directly on the xbox.

As far as I know, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership can not be purchased with Microsoft Points.

Your best option that I can see would be to buy an Xbox LIVE Gold membership subscription card from retail or online, and then ship it to her. You can often find them on sale for $39.99.
