Lost access to gamertag

Greetings.

Several years ago, I lost access to my gamertag. Attempting to log in through either the Xbox website or my 360 console would result in generic "an error as occurred, please try again" message.

I'm sure it wasn't hacked as:

a) entering a password I knew was wrong would result in a "wrong password" error. Entering the correct password would instead produce the above mentioned error.

b) the gamertag is still viewable on the website and hasn't been touched since my last login.

The email address I had registered to the account was ISP provided and is long dead. Is there any way of retrieving this gamertag and having my current email address registered to it? I would be able to supply the name, billing address and credit card that
was last used on it.

Lost access to my gamertag.

Every gamertag has its own Windows Live ID. When you created the "Serdudds" gamertag you would have used another email address then the one you just created for Dawn of War 2. Try some to use some of your other email addresses to see if one of them is linked
to the gamertag you want. If not call customer support, give them the gamertag, and answer the security questions
they ask you to prove that it's your account, and have them provide you the right WLID.

I recently purchased a game and tried to log onto my xbox. When I tried to log into my typical gamertag "Serdudds", it said I needed to recover my gamertag. I had recently purchased Dawn of War 2 which required me to create a windows Live ID which I needed
to sync to my xbox live account. Anyways, I used that ID to recover and it brought up a completely different ID, "" which seemed to be randomly generated at the time in Dawn of War 2. I can now no longer switch back to my original gamer tag
which has my friends list, save files and gamer points. Does anyone know how I can re-access this? It's pretty frustrating.

Even though the email is long dead you should be able to reset the password, access the account then add the new email address. This would mean quite a few steps and depend if you had backup security set like phone or alternate email.

The error may be due to a lack of an update or failure to accept any new terms.

XBOX recommend these steps for the error :
support.xbox.com/.../error-message-email-address-not-valid

You are always welcome to ring support and be guided through some steps.

If the email is working then the password may have changed or be slightly different to what you think. Your first steps may be to recover or change the password.

Have you tried the lost password solution :

or in account security there is a reset password function :
support.xbox.com/.../security
