Looking for a TV for 4K HDR Gaming on the Xbox One X?

    Hey, everyone,

I have been looking at updating my current TV which I use for couch gaming on my PC and for my Xbox One X/PS4 Pro also.

Things that I want with the new TV are:

    • 4K 10 bit HDR 60hz via HDMI that's compatible with PC Windows 10, Xbox One X and PS4 Pro and will work natively for gaming with no issues in HDR.
    • Low input lag for gaming with HDR enabled.
    • Has a game mode feature.
    • More than one HDMI 2.0 port (My current Samsung 4K TV which is about 3 years old only has the one HDMI 2.0 port and it's a pain having to unplug and plug in every time I want to switch devices for 4K.).

I have been looking at these two TV's specifically:

    LG OLED55B7T 55" 4K UHD HDR: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/hd-tele...

    Samsung Q7 Series 7 55'' 4K UHD HDR: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/hd-tele...

I am leaning more towards the LG from what I have read online about them what do you guys think?

    :)

    4k TV

An Xbox One right now, no 4k TV will make a difference. It will retain Input at 1080p only. For the Xbox One S and Project Scorpio, start looking for deals and prices like

    Google

In addition, to realize the best image possible make sure the 4k TV has HDR as a feature. All 4k TV's do not feature HDR.

    Hello Snake,

Thanks for bringing the question to us. There are a few things that could cause this. First being the TV is not one of the recommended HDR for 4k that the Xbox support. For example if the TV is not HDR it will only support certain aspects of 4k. To check
on 4K and compatibility I will provide you with a few links to look over and troubleshoot the 4K.

Hope this helps, let us know.

    Thanks,

    Brad

Either TV should be fine; a quick glance at some online reviews seems to be a close match. Personally, I'm using a Samsung TV. The HDR colors are vivid in the "Enhanced games", and the 4K resolution is crisp. If I were you, I'd drop by an electronics store
so you can see these TVs in person.

Both TVs seem to have great, low input lag when game mode is enabled. So I should see no worry there. Yes, both TVs will have a game mode, I saw that in the online reviews.

On my Samsung TV, all HDMI ports are capable of 4K input, but only one port is able to take in 4K+HDR. The TVs you're looking at may possibly be the same deal. An easy solution is to get an HDMI switch - you'll want to avoid repeatedly unplugging the HDMI connector,
as that could eventually wear out the HDMI port on the device.

Go with the OLED, the Samsung is nothing more than a fancy LCD but it still has all the flaws of LCD technology.

OLED HDR blows away everything else on the market, they cannot compete against it.

Tip: On LG OLED in HDR game mode set HDR dynamic contrast to low to make it appear a bit brighter.

No 4K without HDR (xbox one x)

you need hdr for 4k output

    Actually, you don't.

Uhd and hdr are required for 4k output

You need UHD, in the sense that you need the TV to support 3840 x 2160 resolution, but you don't need HDR enabled to reach 4K. UHD 4K is the amount of screen resolution available measured in pixels, HDR is the ability of the TV or monitor to display more
    natural colours.

Note that the Xbox One S can do HDR in games that support such a feature, but regardless of what resolution you set, all games max out at 1080P internally. If the display is 4K, it will remain in 4K, but games will only be upscaled. Only the Xbox One X
can play Enhanced titles in 4K natively.

You should be able to disable HDR, how you disable it depends entirely on your TV. Disabling HDR via the TV settings should not disable 4K screen resolution. Indeed, some Xbox One games do not support HDR, Fallout 4 on the One X can play in 4K for instance,
but it does not support (or indeed have an option for) HDR.

On my Sony Bravia Android based TV, I had to go to the main settings and enable HDR functionality. Even then, I had to set the HDR setting to 'Auto' on the HDMI port I have my console connected to. If you have HDR set to 'On' all of the time, non HDR games
will display the wrong colours, look oversaturated. With 'Auto' enabled, HDR will only operate when it detects an HDR supported game. This may not be a feature of your display however.

What make and model is your TV?

    ? Xbox support 4K?

Some TVs may ask to first enable 4K / HDR on specific outputs, please look into your TV Settings.

The Xbox one X/S cable is 4K ready and works with 60Hz

Epson 5040UB : Your TV setup doesn't support HDR10 for gaming. Games won't be shown in HDR

Yep. I think there will be a lot of dissapointed people when they find out their 4K HDR TV won't play Xbox One 4K games because they don't have a full 18Gig HDMI pipe.

The requirement from the X to have 4K @60 and 30 Bits just to play a 4K game seems off. I can see where the bandwidth requirement would be there for 4K @60 with HDR, but I'd like to play the game in either 4K without HDR or 1080P with HDR but the current
setup on the X (and S) will not let you do this.

Odd thing is that I played Horizons:Zero Dawn on my PS4 Pro and the first thing it did was tell me I could have either 4K or HDR but not both. I chose HDR and the game looks fantastic. I can't believe the XBOX One X won't do this.

So, if you have a display that does 4K@ 24 with HDR then the XBOX One X is just a nice game machine that will play videos in HDR for you but none of the UHD features are available to you for gaming.

Microsoft, surely you can change this and allow HDR in 1080P?
