Long time player, first time complainer

I am a 47 year old father of 4 and have been involved with the gaming community since the early pong consoles. I worked as store manager for Electronics Boutique and have owned a console from every major console manufacturer; including the Atari Jaguar,
3DO, Sega Saturn, PlayStation 1 and 2, and the Neo Geo. I have enjoyed Microsoft game systems since their work with the Sega Dreamcast and I currently own three Xbox 360s (two with Kinect) and the Xbox One. I also have Xbox Live for myself and my three children
    still at home.

I love the Xbox 360, so much so that I have purchased 4 (the ex took one) and for the first time in my long history of gaming, I didn’t bother purchasing the competition (PlayStation 3). The Xbox One is a different story. I haven’t been disappointed in a
new console like this since the Atari Jaguar (3DO close second). I’ve had problems with every aspect of the system.

The Kinect is still spotty. When using the voice commands you have to repeat yourself over and over. Especially when powering on and off. It refuses to recognize one of my daughters, and takes several seconds (at least 20), sometimes minutes to recognize
everyone else. We stopped using it and sign-in manually. Controlling with gestures is cumbersome and the hand cursor movement is pretty shaky, even worse than the 360 Kinect from my observations. Definitely not worth the extra $100.

The HDMI pass-through is extremely problematic. I have Verizon Fios service and there are problems recognizing the box and sometimes it flickers on and off. I have to turn everything off, unplug the Xbox One and start over at least three times a week. The
OneGuide is slow and doesn’t have any advantages over the normal Fios menu. Not to mention that there is no surround sound through the pass through. It is such a headache that I just disconnected it. I would much rather switch inputs on my TV than deal with
all the issues surrounding the pass-through.

The Blu-ray player does have some Kinect commands, but you still have to use the controller to navigate the discs menus and start the movie. Not the best experience. Also because the pass-through doesn’t support surround sound, I have to move the optical
audio out back and forth from my cable box to the Xbox One because my receiver, like most, has just one optical audio input.

The record feature works as advertised, but it would be nice to have more precise control of when it starts and stops recording. Let’s say I want to do a little walkthrough for my friends. I can’t do that with the current setup. Going back 20 seconds when
you say record is cool, and we use it all the time, but the ability to manually start and stop would be nice.

The games we have play fine except for Battle Field 4 (their problem not yours), but no big difference in game play or graphics from the 360, at least not yet.

While I’m complaining let me point out my disappointment in discontinuing the family service. Being able to send my kids allowance from my account and managing their playing habits was exceptional. The greatest addition to the service ever, and then “poof”
it’s gone. One thing you could do to improve the service and make parents happy would be to have game developers use the restrictions associated with the live account automatically. For instance let’s say I don’t mind my 10 year old playing Gears of War, but
I don’t want him to be exposed to the cursing. I should be able to establish parameters for my children’s accounts and the game adjust according to those parameters instead of counting on my child to use the no cursing setting within the game.

I have been waiting for an all-in-one console to take over the living room. Being able to watch TV, browse the internet, Skype, play games, listen to music, and watch movies through one device has been a dream of mine. Honestly, this is something that I
have talked about with my friends for over 20 years. I had such high hopes, but the Xbox One has feel far short of that dream. The Xbox in the end, has turned out to be just another game console, and as game consoles go not the best one out there. Not happy
    fellas not happy at all.

    Sincerely,

    Former Xbox Fan

    :)

Long time xbox loyal player. First time upset

I understand all this is been said but need to get it off my chest as a loyal xbox user. We all have alot to be frustrated about. As a loyal xbox gamer Microsoft has me in a pickle, 1. I cant afford rrp games all the time at what £49.99 + i like to buy
used games, the used game system is there for people who aint *** rich. 2. In 5 to 8 years time + when xbox one is no longer a profit to Microsoft and they shut down servers so i cant play games due to having to connect to the internet to even play single
player, cant sell the dam thing either because nobody els could use it then what? 3. I don't like the connect simple, so why the *** does it need to be constantly connected? They say you can turn it off yeah great but cant disconnect it? WTF that leaves alot
of questions to be asked. I don't want to constantly be saying xbox on xbox dashboard xbox **** I'm a gamer my controller should be used for all. 4. No self publishers? Why just why.. In turn means less game dev's making games and were loosing out on titles
that could be potentially great. State of decay for instance, self published & jack *** budget but look what they have managed to do. 5. £420.. Yeah the console has alot of great *** but again Microsoft are only catering for people who can afford outrageous
price's like that. Where do less well off or poor people win? 6. Soldiers do a job i am not willing to do and for very basic pay for risking their life's. after a hard days graft looking after each other fighting risking lives they like to play some Fifa or
madden or halo or w.e so basically having no steady internet they cant anymore and Microsoft seem to not give a s##, no it don't effect me but still harsh. Love the look of the games but is it really worth it? Excuse any spelling mistakes please.

  5. Thanks for the feedback. I have been waiting to the the X1 and the more of these replies I read, the more I am glad I have waited. I think eventually the X1 will indeed be a great console, but it has a long way to go and a lot of updates before it reaches
    that objective.

I'm sorry to hear that the Xbox One isn't living up to some basic expectations. I'm glad I only had money to choose one next-gen console, I chose the PS4. It's been running completely fine since launch. My brother had an Xbox One and it is no longer in the
house since he didn't take the same liking to it as he did his PS4. The updating process for him was maddening and it really did seem like more of a pain than it should've been in this day and age. Good luck with future console/video game purchases.
