Loading games off external Hard drive doesn't work (Xbox One)

I Bought a new USB 3.0 cable for the external hard drive and played about three and a half hours of call of duty off the external drive with no problems. It looks like the cable was the problem. Thanks to everybody for the help.

Thank you for the updates regarding this situation!

I would say, trying connecting the external hard drive to a Laptop/PC. If it appears then

format the drive. If it doesn't appear then there is an issue with the drive.

Once the drive is formatted, plug it back into the console (it may format again to the correct format - NTFS). Then transfer one of the games onto the external drive and see if it works.

I'm using a wireless connection. The strange thing is the signing out only happens when I play the game off the external. When I play the same game off the internal drive it works fine.

I've moved games from the external to the internal and they work when they are on the internal and have problems when on the external. I've ordered a new cable for the drive that arrives on Monday or Tuesday. I'll try that then if that doesn't work, I'll
format the drive and reinstall the games. I think its either a problem with the drive or a networking problem. The reason I think it maybe a network problem is my gamertag keeps getting logged out and the game says changed of user.

will this mean I will have to start the games from the start. I have about 2.5 days of gameplay in fallout 4 and don't want to start again.

the thing is the game works perfect when I transfer the games on to the internal drive.
