    Certain games do not allow online unless you SHARE there profile.

    Check here Sign in to your Microsoft account go to the left, click on privacy and security.

    Check the first tab the one that says SHARE (it says 360 but does not mention XBOX ONE), make sure this is set to ALLOW.

    Also make sure they are old enough, some games check the date of birth on the account to make sure they are old enough to play it.

    Hi there,

    to make sure we understand the situation, a few questions first,

    since you mentioned kids, did you create a seperate account for each of them?

    And is the 1yr redeemed on one of their accounts or a different account?

    Based on the answers for these questions, we can try and determine the next steps.

    If you mean xbox live gold yes....because xbox live is the xbox online service platform and xbox live gold is the subscription, and non gold subscribers are still connected to xbox live always.
