Licensing a Game Engine Owned by Mircrosoft

This is the first step on my quest to try getting into contact with someone at Microsoft concerning engine licensing. I'd like to try working with the old "BANG!" Engine, used by such classics as Age of Mythology, and Age of Empires III. So far, I've been at an absolute loss on who to contact about this extremely particular subject. I'm not naive enough to assume Microsoft will just start working with me, a forum stranger, but it seems like some sort of start to gaining an understanding of how this could possibly work.

Is there anyone out there who can point me in the right direction?

I would love to see what we can do for you to help you out with this engine request.

So, the Bang! engine was used by Ensemble and also on part of the AOE franchise. I have contacted the team over at World's Edge about this request and they have stated they can look into it and would kindly request to have you submit a request on their support page here by clicking submit a request in the upper right-hand side.

Now I can't guarantee that we would be able get you access into the engine, but this is the best place to start for now. I hope this helps and happy gaming.

Master War Hero, I hate to burst your bubble but he is completely correct. you do not own the game, you buy the right to play it (license) but you do not own the game. If you would own the game you would have the right to adapt it, to reverse engineer it
etc. So technically he is right. I do agree however that MS should be less anal about license transfer as long as it is connected to an xbox live account.

And what I meant by other developers was people outside of EA. Like how Unreal Engine 3 was used by TONS of games and they all produced so many different gaming/visual experiences. Just search for the list of Unreal Engine 3 games and you get dozens upon
dozens of games that differ widely.

A game engine doesn't always have to recreate the same exact type of graphics. I really do hope Frostbite 2 does get some more licensing to other studios. It would be a shame to only have it exclusively for one or two games!

That's because EPIC allowed it to be licensed to other developers at a reasonable cost. It was cheaper to use the Unreal engine than to develop their own. As for the Frostbite engine, I read somewhere that it's DICE's proprietary engine and EA won't allow
licensing to other developers.

I would love to see developers license out the engine used in the Crysis games... Crysis games have amazing graphics and I would love to see how other games would run and look using their engine...

First thing, Rage has been in the works since 2007 months before Borderlands was ever announce, if you look up the first ever Borderlands trailer the graphics for borderlands once looked like Rage, but gearbox changed the game graphics for borderlands.

i think gearbox, stepped down because once they saw the gods of FPS at ID have a game like theirs in the works they were like we can't compeat.

Other info about Rage compared to Borderlands, is that Borderlands uses the Unreal game engine that they licensed to use where as ID has built their own game engine a brand new game engine called Idtech 5
