Let's Talk About Sound Design

Today's discussion is gonna be about sound design in video games. Sound design does not constitute soundtrack and music, it means ambience and tone.

I like the way most modern horror games such as Outlast and Alien Isolation have been using very quiet and distant ambience to set the tone of those pieces as dark, terrifying, and like something is watching you. Then you have games like Enter The Gungeon,
where every aspect of the game from the guns to the enemies and players make some sort of noise. You then have games like Red Dead 2 where the sound of snow crunching under your feet is oh so satisfying.

But what do you guys think? Do I give too much credit for horror games just being designed so well? What game has the best sound design in your opinion?

i feel like sound and design has come along way from the beginning (obviously). i feel a game like Rainbow six siege has used sound very well as you can hear footsteps and it doesn't just travel straight to you, the sounds actually
come through doors like IRL, i like this as it requires skill, and constant awareness. this is good for high level plays as people cant sneak up behind you.

Assassins creed origins also had fantastic sound, which I think is often overlooked because it's so emmersive

Horror games do tend to have the best atmospheric audio and it makes the game in most cases.

Well, you mentioned RDR 2. That game is just insane in all aspects. It's quite amazing how much the world feels alive and that is also due to the sound effects that occur in the background while playing.
