Kinect required to use Cortana

Kinect Not Consistently Controlling TV

Hello, do you have Cortana enabled and are using the "hey Cortana" commands ? If so try turning Cortana off and use the regular "xbox" commands to test if your Kinect then has better control.

It's also a good choice to set up the Kinect again in the Kinect options on your Xbox One.

 

Why doesn't Cortana respond when I speak into my mic?

of course... I use Cortana through my Kinect but I want to use her through my mic

 

Here's some perspective from the other side....

I used voice recognition in gaming for the first time over 15 yrs ago (Game Commander) in CS and Everquest. It's was a cool novelty for a while but it became very obvious that a keystroke would always be quicker and more reliable. Nothing has changed in
that aspect.

I don't think it's debatable anymore that there is a large segment of the Xbox community that doesn't want to talk to their consoles, if that weren't the case the Kinect wouldn't have been unbundled.

I firmly believe that with Win 10 we'll see the ability to see game scaling on the console and if this (Cortana/Kinect) can be made purely optional from a driver/resource standpoint then I have no issue with it but if it continues to impact the consoles
performance in gaming then I think MS just shot themselves in the foot.

My question is this......if Cortana and the Kinect become optional app/driver installs how many of you would actually use it if impacted graphics/framerate of game compared to those that didn't use it?

 

I just hope that here in the UK they use Jen Taylor's voice for Cortana. I hate the localised one they give us on the Windows Phone.

 

Anyone who thinkes navigating the One with a controller is faster is wrong, last night playing the Witcher during the loading cut scene I remembered I had notifications turned off. Three voice commands later and in the space of a few seconds I had gone
to settings, preferences and back to Witcher 3 which seamlessly carried on right where it was, I did that without pressing a button and without even thinking about it. Awesome feature of the console.

Using the controller to carry out the same process would have been fiddly and taken God knows how much longer.

I think that's the point some of you are missing.......there are lots of us that simply play a game. I'm not snapping, uploading, taking screen shots, etc. while I'm playing so the ability to do that is irrelevant and when something I don't use impacts the
games performance I see that as a negative.

 

I think that's because you're a solo gamer Randver. I love to snap a bunch of stuff as well as Xbox record that epic moment oh my god I think I'm Jesus! Now with Cortana I can be like Cortana record my godlike gameplay and she'll be like as you command chief
lol. Halo nerd status XD I love Kinect for Netflix. I don't even use my controller for it anymore. Kinect was well worth the 100 bucks for me. I'm not sure what you mean by Kinect impacting game performance. I don't think it does.

 

I agree Defy Lighting.

We are advancing in time and technology. Next generation does not just include a upgrade in just RAM, GPU, and CPU. The Xbox One with Kinect and now Cortana is the true next gen experience in my opinion.

I use my Kinect 2.0 all the time. Now with the addition with Cortana it is going to make my next (current) gen experience that much more amazing.

I'm not a solo gamer, I've got more hours in Warframe and ESO in the last 3 months than anything else. I simply don't use or need those features. I think it's more a matter of me also gaming on the PC that gives me my perspective.....screenshots, recording
gameplay have been around for ages and the novelty wore off long ago. Nobody cares about my Witcher screenshots or videos or the other million people that are doing the same thing.

A quick trip to YouTube will confirm that with the billions of gameplay videos with a dozen or less views.

The Kinect impacts performance because it's using resources that could be used towards game performance. It's why we see the continual 900 vs 1080 threads

 

I think the speed actually depends on the actions being performed. For example, saying "Xbox go to/snap [insert name of game/app here]" or "Xbox record that" is much faster than using the controller while other actions, such as sending a message or invites
(at least in the current iteration of the UI), is generally faster with a controller.

When you look at it just for gaming the controller wins hands down in fact virtually nothing even supports it.

NxtDoc'c comment about people not using a huge cell phone from the 80's is actually my point. What many of you are calling "next gen" "innovative" is actually old technology that died a relatively quick death.

People were doing what is being done on the One (voice commands for gaming) way back in 1998 (Game Commander and various business VR). It wasn't supported because the alternatives (keyboard, mouse, flight sticks) were faster and the input more reliable.
Nothing has changed.

Randver, have you ever thought because it was ahead of its time as well as people were not ready for it?

You see all of this cool technology is movies and games such as Mass Effect or the Movie Sunshine. Talking to EDI or Cortana in Halo. Now we are speaking to Xbox and Cortana. Say what You want Randver (no disrespect buddy), talking to your Xbox, is another
step. Next it will be TV's, Microwaves and cars and then ships.... And so on

Cortana is awesome on my phone. And i can't wait for her on my Xbox

That wasn't the case at all, the problem was it didn't work as well as the alternatives.

Would you play BF4 using only voice commands to reload your weapon? I can't count the number of times I said "Xbox watch History channel" and I got something other than the History channel. Factor the unreliable voice recognition with the length of time
it takes to say "reload" and the Kinect processing it compared to pressing X .....you're putting your virtual life in dire straights.
