  1. Kinect needing recalibration after extended off time (with instant on activated)

Since the new updates, both 11/12 and 11/23, every once in a while, the system at startup, the system automatically goes into the Kinect setup for audio recalibration (as it either needs an update or was unplugged). I have done hard resets and factory resets
for a screen dimming issue (which might be related to the Kinect drivers conflicting with apps and the OS.

Is this due to an update, or the OS not remembering the settings of the Kinect? I have unplugged the Kinect and cleaned the contacts (not with a electrical contact cleaner, but blowing into the plug and jack.

What I also notice after the updates is:

    1. The Kinect no longer wakes up the console if I step away from the room while the console is on, and it dims the screen.

    2. The IR sensors in the Kinect no longer allow syncing of the controller.

    3. Every once in a while I notice the indicator light on the Kinect slightly dimmed (not full dim) but the Kinect still works. If that light is at full brightness, I notice that when videos are played, the screen does dim while the video is being played
and the only way to brighten it is with the controller.

    4. The Kinect takes longer to recognize me at sign in at startup.

Placement of the Kinect is under the TV and it is angled where it is able to see images at least across a 15 foot long room. I can step into the room and I can see my image but sometimes the system does not recognize me right away at that distance; where
before it used to immediately see me and recognize me. I am wary of using a electrical contact cleaner without MS staff verification that it can be used.

    :)

    Kinect recalibration

How do you recalibrate the audio on the Kinect sensor? The freakin menus make no sense at all. All I can find is in troubleshooting where it says "Kinect cant hear me".

On further research, the repeat calibration only occurs after a factory reset. It only occurs one time.

Assuming this is a bug in the boot sector containing the Kinect drivers. Unplugging the Kinect and forced reboots don't help.

  5. Every time the Kinect is moved or audio change it as to be recalibrated that's why you have to do it after a factory reset its not a bug.

    Not correct.

According to staff, and my own knowledge of the technology, once the reset has been performed, and the INITIAL calibration has been performed upon initial startup, it should never repeat the calibration after it has been shut off for several hours.

    Factory reset>initial startup>calibrate Kinect>turn off normally>restart>immediate Kinect calibration.

The above sequence (in plain English) is what it is doing. After a off period of several hours, the Kinect will require a recalibration after the initial calibration has been performed. Nothing in the room has been changed or the sensor has not moved since
    the initial calibration.

  8. Kinect needing recalibration after extended off time (with instant on activated)

Why then does the system do a second recalibration on its own when the system has not moved or the sound is different after it is shut off for the night? I expect the first calibration to be set where I want it to hear me from across the room. A second calibration
is unnecessary. If the room is quiet during a calibration, either it will not respond to spoken commands, or I must be within 2 feet of the sensor to pick up my voice to respond to spoken commands.

  9. I know what you mean about recalibrating again, I got my console day one and its never worked like it should, I think spoken commands would be a better way to calibrate it, sorry this hasn't been any help it seems the Kinect took a big hit with this update,
plenty with problems at the moment hopefully they sort it out soon.

  10. ^^ I think the massive problems (which BTW have been noted on the preview forums) are going to be a hit financially to MS when people find the Xbox to be defective due to programming, like what happened to Windows 8 and 8.1. With the OS being defective from
the beginning, they need to revert back to the beginning and improve that with years of testing before it is placed into production. Many people will side with PS3-P4 rather than the xbox because of software issues.

I do agree with you that the calibration must be actively forcing the programming to accept certain speech patterns of certain words in a noisy room to require it to pick up a particular persons voice to use the voice activation. Particularly useful in people
with speech problems and disabilities (I do work with disabled kids, where the X1 can be used with the Kinect).

Before the update, my X1 was working fine, there were few problems. After the update, it is problem after problem.

I do think the backwards compatibility may have something to do with it, and the only solution to that is get rid of the integrated backwards compatibility and have a dual OS where the console is booted either with X1 or X360. I would take that one step
further and also make the Kinect more sensitive in recognizing particular vocal commands as you point out (which ironically, Cortana allows a user to program his/her voice into it so it recognizes speech patterns).
