    has been free since day 1 .. one character at a time though... and no achievements unlocked...

    It has been like that. I believe you get one character free then you have to buy the rest. Haven't played it much as it really isn't my type of game.

    I consider Killer Instinct a FREE DEMO. It's pretty limited unless you actually throw out some money. IMO.
