Just Wondering...

I have been timing my installs for several months now in an attempt to figure out if it is a bug. I have helped people in support chats that get a random "5 hour" update. I am blown away by this as I have never experienced anything longer than 25 minutes.


I would like to know how or why users get this so I can actually help find a fix.

 

Installs for me is 30 - 40 minutes max...Not the best but...

That's why I asked what your internet speed was. We don't know what the overhead (packet lose, etc)is when determining downloads from MS but everything else can be plugged into a calculator and you can see how long it will take.

For instance a 20 GB download with 0 overhead (which isn't possible but since we don't know I'll use that) would need a 155 mps line to download it 17 minutes, 10 mps would take 4.5 hours. A 20GB game should be taking the OP 52 minutes to download with
no overhead, 1 hour 18 minutes with 50 percent overhead (average overhead for downloads) so he's still slower than he should be if he's getting his advertised connection speed.

I have a 300 mps line but my download times are longer than they should be which means the download is being throttled either by MS or my ISP. It appears at some point even a faster connection doesn't help because some other factor is coming into play and
slowing the download.

 

My games take no longer than 20 minutes to fully download to 100%. I bought The Witcher 3 digitally and that was 100% installed in about 15 minutes. I started the install and ran to the store to get beers. I came back about 15 minutes later and it was completely
finished.

These inconsistencies show it is not about speeds. Something is off.

 

What are you're guys speeds, ISP?

This is something that doesn't need to be argued about it's black and white not opinion.

For instance for Brandie to download the The Witcher (25 GB) in 15 minutes he'd need a 300 mps connection and getting that full advertised speed. I have 300 connection but normally get 240 to 290 so I"d be looking at 20 to 25 minutes yet I don't download
it that fast so the question is who's throttling my download.

 

No it really doesn't matter about internet or ISP. As my friend Reaper mentioned, my other buddy has super Internet and occasionally gets 5 hour updates. Not disc installs, but updates/patches

It does matter.

If some people are downloading their content based on their actual internet speed and others of us aren't I'd like to know why and I'm sure others would too. If this is the case then it's apparently not MS throttling (unless it's regional) so it's more likely
my ISP throttling which they aren't supposed to be doing.

 

It matters to you...when it matters to people on an X1 it doesn't to you. TBH,it matters not.,,Those MS Batards...

I have 150mbps but when I downloaded project cars I was downloading at over 200mbps so speeds seem off to me but I don't care was going faster than my iso lol

Im not sure what my speed is. It's advertised as the fastest so I went with it. I'm concious of the times though because I usually keep track of them. If my wife is streaming a movie on the laptop and my kids are watching Netflix at the same time it slows
it up a little bit but not much.

Either way, 2 hours for a download lime the op said is slow. I used to think maybe it was down to a console but now I'm sure because last Sunday I bought Super Mario 3d World and it was around 20 mins. I didn't look to see how big the file was but I'm betting
if it was on the X1 it would be faster.

I remember updates on the PS3 were much longer than the 360. My X1 and laptop are fast though.
