Must we buy A XBox specific HDD?

No, any USB3 device with capacity of 256Gb or more will do it! The Xbox One will also provide power through the USB connection if required (depends on the drive purchased).

I am not sure too many manufacturers allow customers 'inside' the box and let them keep their warranty. I agree it would be nice to have the option of playing from the game disc.

Real names? Meh! I'm waiting for OneGuide because I really do want to have 4 devices on to watch TV... No, honest, I do!

 

What's supposed to be the roll out date for the update?

I'm gonna need an external drive.

 

@john the ps4 doesnt break the warranty sticker to open but see your point but for me more money after more money just to play games isnt on, a lot of people cant afford to go and spend more money when there really isnt any need to,in my eyes they messed
up and this is the easy way out and for me personally have found myself pulling away from this generation and going back on pc and 360 .

 

I agree with the 'spend after spend' argument.

However, that said, I wouldn't want to be in the position of being the one to balance out the 'bangs per buck' product positioning in a highly competitive area such as gaming consoles (been there in a much smaller market place, and lost loads of sleep!!).


Every product development / launch is a gamble. Having to work out what to offer, and at what price whilst looking to hit certain volumes and market share in a world where everyone wants to criticise and feels they could do better, is an enormous challenge.
I guess making a compromise on 'included' disk space is a reasonable place to do it, especially if you planned to allow external drives and in the light tumbling storage costs.

How does the competition fare is this area? That is, do you have to install the full game on a PS4 or will it play from the game disk?

Maybe Microsoft should consider giving the option to play from the game disk and put the decision on how much disk space to use back in the hands of the customer.

 

I wish they just let you play without the need for getting the disc again. BUT if that disc has been in another XBox then you should need to put it in again.

The dimensions of unit are a lot smaller then Amazons description which is a good thing 17.5x12x3.5cm

Its the model Major Nelson is using so compatibility won't be a problem.

@Cloud Can't comment on heat, had it plugged into mains and cool as cucumber but maybe because its not yet in use, nothing in instructions about room for venting. Only vents are at rear and underneath.

Does this connect via a USB to USB cable and is this provided or required as a seperate purchase?

Also, any idea when the June Update takes effect?

 

@Az Cable is provided which is standard USB one end, strange connector other end. Sorry got no idea when update arrives but I'm ready

How is the device powered? Does it have it's own power supply or is it supposed to work from the USB cables?

 

^This one is powered by mains, I've heard rumours that the Xbox One will supply power through USB to HDs that can be powered that way but I'm guessing my Seagate doesn't have that feature.

 

I've seen the same product at 5400 rpms and 7200 rps.

Am I right in thinking "bigger number = better"?

Yep bigger=faster, mine is the 7200rps. Not too sure if the difference would be noticeable.
