    I would suggest you to check the NAT type of your connection. If either you or your friend have a strict or moderate NAT type that will cause you issues in joining each other's game sessions.

    I don't think the issue is connection at this point. It feels like a problem with xbox itself

    We've both checked our nat types, and fixed any issues that were there. Both of our nat types are open, but we still can't join each other.
