It's always worth bartering with your ISP if your 12 month initial contract is up.

I was paying £56 a month for the top TV package (no premium channels though) with a V+ HD box (pretty standard cable box), the top phone package with free calls to landlines 24/7, and 60 down/3 up broadband.

I'm now paying 50p per month more, but my V+ HD box was swapped out for a TiVo and my broadband was increased from 60/3 to 152/12.

Just phone the retentions department and say that you're looking for a better deal. They're used to people doing that. If you're out of contract and you're still paying the listed price for your services, chances are you will get a discount. It usually means
signing a new 12 month contract, but most people are happy to do that if it means they're saving money or getting their services boosted for the same money.

  5. So , we are still peer to peer , all in the same boat , and its pointless paying top dollar for fastest speeds as your game is governed by the lowest speed in the lobby , .

No point in moaning then ..lol.

it's not necessarily pointless, in theory, games like Titanfall that have dedicated servers should not fall prey to one person with a poor connection because everyone is connecting to that server to send and receive game data, so in theory it should only
be people with poor connections that will show everybody lagging, and to everyone else, that 1 person will be rubber banding.

in games like most COD games that use peer to peer hosting, then 1 person is the host, and if they have a poor connection then everyone will have a bad game, and if it got bad enough, that is when you'd see "host migration" as the game tries to pick a new
peer to host, or that would also happen if the host player quit the game, or got disconnected.

in the end, you don't need a lot of bandwidth to play online games (unless game streaming like PS now actually works and catches on), but lower the latency the better, which typically goes in order of fiber>cable>dsl>wireless>satellite with some exceptions.

but if you are expecting to be playing online while you or someone else is streaming video then you'll want more bandwidth, because lets say you have a 1.5m DSL connection, you would play online just fine, but if someone on that DSL connection starts streaming
Netflix then you'd see some major lag because Netflix requires a minimum of 1.5m for standard def(about 8m for HD) which would use up all of the bandwidth and cause a bottleneck increasing your latency.

i have a 30m connection with my cable company, my ping times to the closest Titanfall server is normally about 35ms and i experience no problems playing while my wife is streaming Nettflix and my room mate upstairs is streaming... god knows what... and watching
the traffic on my router running between 15-25m.

also, if you are experiencing on going issues, it could mean that your connection is experiencing packet loss/latency, might follow up with your ISP to verify, they can usually remotely check your modem for signal issues that may be causing issues.

"Once again, you guys don't know what expensive internet is... Especially expensive internet with lower speeds and even less ISP competition."

thats sucks but the U.S. has approx. 300 million people compared to your approx. 21 million. We have a much greater demand for fast internet connections than you. Therefore our speeds should be better. South Korea has approx. 50 million people and yet their
connections are typically 4x faster and still cheaper. This doesn't make sense.

For sure, I get what you're saying... We're in the process of rolling out a National Broadband network, but it's not going to plan due to an incompetent government... $60 billion and it most likely won't even be fibre to the residence as was planned before
the change in government, just the node... 25Mbs down instead of the 100Mbs as originally promised... Then on top of that it'll take years more than estimated, cost more than estimated, and the consumer will pay the price...

Australia is great... But our internet blows.

South Korea working on 5G, 1Tb down... I cry thinking about this sometimes...

Like Dynamic said, it's worth checking with your broadband provider, you could be entitled to a free upgrade.

I'm with BT here in the UK.

We got a free upgrade, originally we got about 14mb download, just under 1mb upload

They upgraded us to BT Infinity, we now get 77mb download, just under 18mb upload, due to go up again ( for free again ) in next month or so, estimated to be around 120mb download, not sure about upload though.

I have to make do with whatever my country has which is still far behind the rest of the world and my location in my country isn't on the high priority list for faster internet anytime soon.

I am aware and I do care, but there is nothing I can do about it except move to a bigger place or another country if I want faster internet.
