  1. Its time to raise ......

I very recently discovered that a lot of people are actually still really far behind due to the fact that they've used the same ISP for years and haven't asked for an upgrade even though they may get one for free. I get 30mb and that is the most basic package
with my ISP (Virgin Media, UK) and I'm currently (still... grrr) waiting for my 50mb upgrade. Despite living in a fairly crappy area, I still have the ability to get a 152mb connection.

Zero Divided is correct though, although not always the number one problem, the primary problem is often with the ping and if people are playing with trans-atlantic friends then this could quickly ruin a lobby. Other problems may come with whatever is happening
in a particular gamer's house. Despite my good connection, not having any QoS management on my router means that games can become unplayable if my Mum decides to stream video on her iPad.

  2. So ... would a higher minimum b/b speed , and matchmaking based on ping to the host not help ?.

as long as a player has at least a 1.5m download and 0.5m upload with low latency, you wouldn't know the difference between that player vs. another player that has a 100m download connection because when playing a multiplayer game you are only downloading
information about the other players, like coordinates, equipment and actions which take a very small amount of data(unless the person with the 1.5m connection is also streaming a video or doing something else that would use the available bandwidth).

so higher bandwidth will not make a difference, but latency(ping time) and packet loss changes everything, that is what causes you or other players to rubber band and lag because either the latency is too high which makes it seem like you're being shot through
cover because on your game, you are already in cover, but if that information is delayed to other players games, then to them you are still in the open before reaching cover. packet loss will cause player to rubber band because the information being sent about
the players X/Y coordinates are being lost and has to be re-sent from the host.

So many people have not a clue...

IT HAS ZERO TO DO WITH HOW FAST YOUR *** IS....

I can sit in my office with a single T1 circuit @ 1.5 up/down and I will have a much better connection than most of the people in this room...

Stream a movie while playing on your 1.5 and tell me the same thing.

Some of the low connection quality icons on Titanfall are due to friends from other countries playing together. I'm from the UK and occasionally I'll game with an American friend, so if he joins the European servers, he only gets a rating of 1 bar for connection
quality even though he has a decent broadband connection.

I don't think it's an issue in a game like that anyway, given that it uses proper dedicated servers. It's much more of an issue with a client/server (i.e. P2P) model where one person is the host, as the quality of the experience depends a lot on their connection
being solid, plus cheats can exploit the situation by using lag switches - something they can't do with a dedicated server.

Besides, I wonder how many people are really out there gaming on dial up in 2014? I can't imagine it's many people. Imagine installing a game from a disc, then going online to find that there's a 5GB patch to download before you can play. It would take over
a week to download it, lol.

  7. Think of the size of your connection as a pipe - the bigger it is, the more you can have flow through at one time, but that doesn't mean it has the pressure behind it to push it through faster.

That being said, I looked at my ISP today and discovered that the best DSL speeds that they do have in my area is only 6mbps down, which is what I currently have, as seen

    here

There are other options, but considering I live out in the country with a family that thinks what we're paying now is too expensive, it isn't likely that I'm going to be getting a higher speed until either prices go down or I move out. :'(

I have to make do with whatever my country has which is still far behind the rest of the world and my location in my country isn't on the high priority list for faster internet anytime soon.

I am aware and I do care, but there is nothing I can do about it except move to a bigger place or another country if I want faster internet.

Clearly you don't know much about Multiplayer's, Unless you have spent 4 years like I have with EA servers, you should try Battlefield 4 servers right now IT is a nightmare unless you live in direct path or NEAR a Server HUB, OR like allot of people in the
US, "My connection over 5g (Wifi) is reporting 80+ meg Download and 11meg upload however i keep getting kicked from EA Servers" You really think you have a snowballs chance in HELL running into an killing this dude with only 20mb Down & 2mb UP? Living in
Canada Or about 75% of the rest of the US No where near a server Hub.

Surprisingly the U.S. has relatively slow internet speeds compared to other countries. The reason: lack of competition among isp. Not only that but our internet is more expensive.

"Surprisingly the U.S. has relatively slow internet speeds compared to other countries." Try Australia... We're worse off than the U.S.

"The reason: lack of competition among isp. Not only that but our internet is more expensive." Once again, you guys don't know what expensive internet is... Especially expensive internet with lower speeds and even less ISP competition.

Of course I'm just talking generally... I'm sure there are some exceptions.

We have fibre here, it's available to the south side of our town right now, I get it this month or early next, but, the speeds I get now are better than some of you in USA, I'm in rural Scotland and get nearly 3 times what GG gets, when the fibre is connected
it should be 35mb/s minimum to 75mb/s maximum, that's what most of the player I know get.

I get 20mb down an 2 up NOW an it is the same as when I had 5mb down an 1 up, I also have an option to buy 50mb Up but I wont be wasting my $$ on that I already pay close to $175 a month, that includes Cable & Phone.

Like Dynamic said, it's worth checking with your broadband provider, you could be entitled to a free upgrade.

I'm with BT here in the UK.

We got a free upgrade, originally we got about 14mb download, just under 1mb upload

They upgraded us to BT Infinity, we now get 77mb download, just under 18mb upload, due to go up again ( for free again ) in next month or so, estimated to be around 120mb download, not sure about upload though.
