Issues with Xbox Series X External Hard Drive Compatibility

    Hello everyone,

I'm encountering some issues with my Xbox Series X and external hard drive compatibility. Whenever I try to connect my external drive, the console either doesn't recognize it or throws an error. I've ensured that my hard drive is formatted correctly and have even tested it on other devices where it works perfectly. I've also tried different USB ports on the Xbox, but no luck. Is anyone else experiencing similar issues or has found a solution? Any advice or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Best regards,

Hello, My name is Jesse. I'm an Independent Advisor and a member of the Microsoft community and I'd love to assist you today.

External SSDs do not work on the Series X except you're using it for backwards compatible titles. Games optimised for the Series X are not compatible with that external drive. Here's the only external drive that is compatible for your console https://www.xbox.com/en-US/accessories/hard-dri...

The new expansion card for Xbox Series X

    Hi,

Current external hard drives are USB 3.0 5,400 RPM mechanical hard drives. These drives are very slow compared to the Expansion card. You won't be able to run Series X/S games from current external hard drives, not even the 2.5" external SSD drives either.
But, you will be able to archive your Series X/S games to these drives to save downloading again.

The expansion card can run all compatible Xbox games. Which will be Series X/S, Xbox One and the BC Xbox 360 and original Xbox games on the BC list.

Xbox One and other Backwards compatible games will load a lot faster on either the internal storage or the expansion card than they would if you ran them off your external hard drive.

Microsoft has a video on YouTube showing 'The Outer Worlds' loading in just 11 seconds on a Series X/S SSD, compared to nearly 60 seconds on Xbox One.

Is it safe using an old Xbox one internal hard drive as an external storage for my new Xbox series x?

Hi and thanks for reaching out. I hope you’re doing well. I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you and I'll be happy to help you.

It is safe to use a reformatted hard drive as an external storage option for your Xbox Series X. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

    1. Make sure that the hard drive is compatible with your Xbox Series X. The hard drive should be USB 3.0 and have a capacity of at least 256GB.

    2. If the hard drive was previously used in another device (such as an Xbox One S), make sure that you have properly formatted it before using it as external storage for your Xbox Series X.

    3. As with any external storage device, there is always a risk of data loss or corruption if the hard drive is not used properly. To minimize this risk, make sure to handle the hard drive gently and keep it away from extreme temperatures, moisture, and physical damage.

Overall, as long as you follow these guidelines, you should be able to use your old hard drive as external storage for your Xbox Series X without any problems.
