Issues with Xbox live and system update

I keep trying to connect to Xbox live on kids 360. Keeps prompting me to system update with I say yes to. Then it sends me to test Xbox live connection. First two hurdles are cleared but when it gets to Xbox live it again sends me to system update. I again
say yes and it say there is still a problem with my connection and then gives me 2 suggestions. I have tried just about everything from th comprehensive list on the Xbox website but nothing works. I copied the system update on to a usb and then when I plug
into the console it first tells me about the security update which I agree to but then it just freezes on Xbox intro screen. It does not start the update. I am going crazy with this. Any help? Thanks

the error message means the update could not be downloaded from Xbox LIVE.

Please try the following:

(1) Try installing the update again.

I have the original console with the built in 4GB memory unit and a 32GB flash drive. I tried a bunch of things but the thing that seemed to kick the update into gear was turning off the console, unplugging the power cord, tapping the power button on the
console while still unplugged, and leaving it like that for 1 min. When plugging it back in and restarting it, got the system update message again, accepted, and this time was able to get the system update downloaded.
