Issues with external Series X USB SSD

I had a external USB 3.0 SSD for the One X working without issues, now I plugged it to the Series X, it started updating games (no problem) but meanwhile I plugged a second, newer, better USB SSD and started moving the games which weren't being updated.
The process just got stuck in the middle of some game, the "My games" menu stopped working and the console wouldn't turn off.

So I had to unplug the console, and when restarted it wouldn't detect neither USB SSD, had to unplug both of them and plug them in again, then I just let it keep downloading the updates in the old USB SSD and then moved everything to the new USB SSD without
    more issues.

But then I started downloading some games in the new external SSD (old one is now unplugged forever) and turned the console off (quick start mode) to let it keep downloading while on stand by. Then I remembered a game I also wanted to install, so turned
the console on again and... The same bug. It would tell me a game was half downloaded but wouldn't load "my games" and the console wouldn't turn off again. So unplugged again, restarted, and again it wouldn't see the external SSD. Unplugged it, plugged it
again, and it fortunately just kept downloading from where it was.

So I guess external USB storage es pretty bugged.

    :)

    Xbox one series S & portable SSD's

    Hi,

You can use USB external SSD drives on Series X/S or you can buy a 2.5" PC SSD and attach it to a SATA to USB 3.1 adaptor.

These drives are a lot faster than a standard USB 3 external HDD. However, you can only play Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox BC titles directly from them. Series X/S games can only be played from the internal drive or the optional Expansion Card.

Xbox series X|S alternative high speed storage expansion

    Hi,

No, sorry it won't work. The USB ports on the Series X|S are USB 3.1 which have a maximum speed of 500MB/s. This means, no matter what drive you buy, no matter what speed it's rated at, you're stuck at the max speed of the USB port.

The only drives that can be used for Series X|S games are either the internal or the storage expansion card.

I have the Expansion card for my Series X. I also have an external 2TB USB SSD in an enclosure. I can only use the external SSD for Xbox One games. They do load a lot faster than a mechanical hard drive, but I can't play my Series X games off it.

What's the Best Storage increase for XBOX SERIES X Console

The biggest difference is that if you want to play the Series X/S version of games they must be installed on the internal SSD or the Seagate SSD Expansion card. They cannot be installed on an external USB 3.0 drive, Quick Resume will also not work with any external USB drive. Previous generation games can still be launched from an external drive.

Personally I have the Seagate expansion SSD and prefer the speed and convenience it offers knowing that no matter what I'm installing the best version of the game and able to use all the enhancements that comes from playing on a Series X. It's worth noting that for the price, it's not much more that some of the high performances SSDs available for PC but it is definitely not cheap.

    Xbox one X

All Xbox One X consoles contain a standard 2.5" mechanical hard drive that is not user replicable. There are no official models with an SSD. Any discussions regarding replacing the internal drive are strictly prohibited on these forums.

You can use an external SSD on a One X. This can be one you can buy ready to plug in with the built-in USB cable or you can buy a standard SATA III SSD and attach it to a SATA to USB adaptor or via drive enclosure connected via USB.

Due to the low I/O speed of the One X, caused by its rather slow CPU, you can't get the same speed as you would with an external USB SSD on the Series X|S consoles.

Xbox Series X eternal hard drive

    Hi,

If your game is now a Series X optimised title, it can no longer be played off an external hard drive. It must be moved to either the internal storage or an optional expansion card.

External USB hard drives are too slow to play Series X optimised games. None Series X games will still run from your external drive. The internal storage in the Series X is a fast NVME SSD. These drives are several times faster than mechanical hard drives.
