Issues Joining a Game Online with Friends

I am new to Xbox gaming (my brother introduced me to how awesome it is) and I have recently bought a Series S. When I purchased the console I also bought a prepaid Gold Live (12 month) membership card. Set the console up, made sure I was purchasing the same games brother has and such. Every time we try to play Call of Duty 2 together online we can't. We can join each other's parties and hear each other over the xbox. We are friends but in CoD when you select friends I have no one listed (he's currently my only friend) and he can't see me listed. He does see all of his other friends. We have also tried it with Terraria, so our children can play together, but it does the same thing. We can see "Join a Game" but we can't select it, it looks grey and we roll right over it. Now, I can go into CoD select Xbox live and play with strangers online. We both have checked our network, multiplayer games, NAT status, made sure we allowed playing with others and friends online in the settings. Everything is good and open for the both of us. The only thing I can think of is after I redeemed the code for Live I noticed it was for Xbox 360 or One only. Would that be the hiccup here? Any thoughts of what to do?

On the Xbox 360 dashboard add him as friend on the friends section so you have his 360 profile added

Hi Ricardo the problem is both. I can't click on the option to join his game and when we are in the game I don't see him when I select see friends. (Y button) Was I supposed to download the profile to the game? I am new to this and I appreciate the help.

Let me see if I understand, correctly, the problem it's that you can't join him because you don't see him on your friend list or because you can't click on the option to Join/invite him?

Enter the backward compatible game, once in it press the View button and menu at the same time, the 360 dashboard will appear, select manage storage, there you can delete the profile that has the problem, after that you go back to the 360 dashboard and download the profile again

I know they are working on it but I can't join friends parties. I can see them online but they can't see me. I have checked my settings and everything is as it should be. I can play online games and create a party of my own but can't join friends. Not
sure if issues are the same.
