Hello everyone! Since the beginning of yesterday (12/28/15), I have been hearing a strange, light "grinding" noise coming from my console's disc drive. It sort of seems like a cross between screeching and grinding, to be more specific. The noise starts upon
any game disc being inserted into the drive, and then closing the drive into my Xbox 360 E console. It will usually continue for a very long time, sometimes so long I stop keeping track. The sound my console creates definitely seems as if it is deriving from
the disc drive and not the fan. I have never experienced such a problem with my Xbox 360 E before, which I have owned since late 2013.

It does not, however, occur every time I play a game. For example, let's say I play a physical game disc and instantly produces the same noise for the next three times. If I remove the disc and reboot my Xbox, followed by inserting the disc once again, the
strange noise may not be created. Overall, sometimes it does not happen...although only if I'm lucky. In the case that a digital game is played(from my hard drive), I will not hear this happening.

For those curious, no, I don't remember moving my Xbox 360 with the disc currently playing. That's a mistake I have vowed not to recreate since my Xbox 360 Elite's "disc drive injury". Anyways, has anyone else experienced this hardware problem? I could sure
use any assisting guidance regarding this. Many thanks!

    :)

  2. CD Drive Noise?

You'll never have a 100% silent disc drive when it is reading data from the disc. As long as it is still reading/detecting the disc fine and not a loud grinding noise, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hmm, a clicking noise...could be the hard drive.

Disc drives malfunctioning in Xbox One units

I just read an article that says Microsoft is acknowledging faulty disc drives in some Xbox One units. Some people are having a problem with the drive making a grinding noise and not reading the disc, so if you have this problem, you're not alone!

    Hi,

I can only think of two possible reasons for this, both of which suggest a fault with the drive. The noise is either coming from the drive motor, which indicates its on its last legs, or the noise is coming from discs being in physical contact with the laser
diode. If its the latter, each one of your game discs will typically have a perfect circle scratch around the disc.

Either way, its not possible to repair this yourself. You'll need to set up a repair for your console.

  5. I have experenced this with a used disc I bought at GS. 360 played all other discs just fine with no noise, but for whatever reason that one disc was the only one which made the noise. Got to looking with a mag glass, and along the center hole in the disc
    was a barley visible crack.

Exchanged the disc and all was well again.

One thing I recommend is install and play all your disc's to/from the HDD. (External or Internal) which saves a lot of wear on your Optical drive.

Whatever you do, do not take the console apart in a cheap attempt at self-repair: that is against the TOU and will eventually get you both an account and console ban.

  7. I appreciate the warning, but it seems that this problem has resolved itself.

It was tempting to think about, though. I'm just glad I didn't go through with the whole process, as that could've ended badly.
