Issue with Xbox One using NBN

I'm new to the NBN (a month in), and new to adjusting the more advanced settings in my router (Netgear Nighthawk D7000v2)

Before switching to NBN (FTTC), I didn't have a problem with my router, or the settings. I was using my consoles wired, and wasn't experiencing any drop-outs. Since getting my FTTC NBN box, my Xbox One can't seem to stay connected for long, and if I run
it wired, it cuts the internet from all my devices. Last night, I experienced 8 drop-outs within 30mins when playing Metro: Exodus via the Game Pass. The internet only drops for a second sometimes, which allows me to jump back in (resume) for some games, but
others - like Metro - require a reset (quit then launch). This game has fairly long initial load times, so I was basically not even playing anymore, just watching the loading screen over and over and over again.

Weeks ago, when I first noticed this problem, I contacted my internet provider (Aussie Broadband), and the tech could see on his end that the Xbox One was causing my router to screw up. Something about forcing a connection and changing the settings? (WAN
back to LAN or something? I don't know all the correct terminology, apologies) We fixed up all the settings in my router to restore my internet connection, but I can't run my Xbox One wired without it cutting out the internet for all devices. If I run it wireless,
it still drops. I can confirm I still have internet access during the drop-outs because my mobile and my PS4 don't drop out when my Xbox One does. There isn't anything wrong with the router, or faults on my providers side/the line. My speeds are almost exactly
what my plan provides (94Mbps/34Mbps on a 100/40 plan, probably more wired). My NAT type should be open, as the tech from my provider opened it when I mentioned I was a gamer
    (thanks, bro)

    Things I've tried:

    • new Ethernet cable (cat 6)
    • switching off instant-on
    • setting both of my Xbox One's to "high priority" in my router settings
    • disconnecting all devices from Wi-Fi whilst one Xbox is in use

Google tells me this is a common problem with the Xbox One's, possibly also a compatibility issue with certain Netgear routers (which would suck because it was pricey, and I bought it specifically for NBN and gaming). A solution would be to change the ports/forward
the ports on my router. I'm not exactly sure how to do that. Ports may not be the only thing that needs adjusting. I've heard the terms MAC address, QoS, static IP - and I'm lost on what exactly I need to change, and what should be left alone. I also have
two Xbox One's in the household. They don't drop out at the same time, so I can only assume the internet connection on one is being prioritised over the other. However, they both experience this drop-out issue, eventually. I would like to use both at the same
time without drop-outs, so that will have to be taken into consideration when changing any router settings, ports etc.

Basically, I don't know what the heck I'm doing, but I'm willing to learn. If anyone could help me out, I'd be most grateful. I'd rather not have to purchase another router, as it was quite expensive, and I don't have the funds to buy another pricey one
    at the moment.

Thanks, people Issue with Xbox One using NBN :)

    Thanks, people :)
Since I don't have the Netgear Nighthawk, I don't know what they mean by "high priority", but on my router, if I enable

    QoS (Quality of Service)
, the router will monitor the used bandwidth, and if a lot of devices use all available bandwidth, the QoS settings can prioritize certain applications (like for example VoIP telephony or video streaming) that require real-time response
and throttle "less important" traffic like downloads or Torrents. QoS makes sure I can still have a stutter free phone call via VoIP, even though all devices try to use up all available bandwidth.

If you set the Xbox Ones to "High Priority" and the consoles start downloading game updates, they will grab all the bandwidth they can get, causing other devices to disconnect or slow down their downloads, or cause stuttering during real time phone calls
    via VoIP or video streaming.

Since you mention you have two consoles, and your ISP set up port forwarding, ask them if they port forwarded you through their data center, and you are still behind their NAT (mention "CG-NAT" or "Carrier Grade NAT" via DS-Lite).

If so, then they will have to change this to give you an actual public IP, without Port Forwarding on their end.

After that, you can then go to your both console's advanced network settings, and give at least one of your two consoles a custom port setting.

If the router "understands" the console's UPnP request for forwarding ports, you're already done.

If you get a "Moderate" or "Strict" NAT on the Xbox's Network settings screen, you need to manually port forward these custom port(s) to the respective console.

In regards to the MAC, QoS, Static IP stuff you mentioned:

    The
    MAC address
"uniquely" identifies your devices (i.e. your two consoles) to your router. In the router settings you can then set up the router's

    DHCP server
(the program responsible for giving your devices an IP-address automatically) to always give a console the same IP.

Since DHCP leases out IP addresses for a certain period of time, it can be possible, that your console will get a different IP if you don't use it for a few days.

With a different IP, the manual port forwarding that you set up will not work anymore, as the IP that you forward the ports to is still the old one in your router, while the DHCP has given the destination console a different IP.

Giving a device an IP address that doesn't change is a "static IP", and is required when you manually port forward.

Sorry mate, I'm no help here. I'm just commenting so I can keep track of this post because I'm about to be put onto the NBN in a few weeks and I want to check back in case I have this issue too haha. Hope you find a fix soon!

Thanks for the input. I'll have to re-read to try and process everything :)

    Some points/questions:

    • I adjusted the priority levels un-prompted, thinking it would stabilise the connection for the XB1's so they wouldn't drop-out. It didn't help. I can't even figure out where the settings are to change it back to default (I'll keep looking...)
    • I haven't forwarded any ports. I don't know how, what to change it to, how many lines of numbers to enter etc. I think I've done it before for my Xbox360, but that was many years (and routers) ago.
    • Do I need to set the UPnP? What about IPv6? (I think the latter is something I shouldn't set as it causes problems?)
Basically, I haven't contacted my Internet Provider about all this because I don't know if they'd have a clue what settings I need to get internet back on my XB1's. Once I can figure out what I need to do, I can work with my provider to make sure I'm setting
everything up properly (and not screwing up my internet connection entirely)

Fair enough! haha I will mention that I have one of the original XB1's. I don't know if anyone else has this problem with newer XB1's, the XB1S, or the XB1X. Or even with other routers. All I know is that if I use my XB1 wired, it resets the routers' settings
back to default (LAN) which isn't compatible with NBN (WAN). I can't say what my XB1 is doing via Wi-Fi. I wouldn't have a clue why it can't keep a stable connection.

Hopefully your experience with Xbox gaming using NBN is uneventful lol

Do you use ADSL, VDSL or Fibre Optic Broadband for Xbox 1?

I use nbn fibre optic 150mb
