  1. Issue with Wired Xbox 360 Controller for Windows 8.1

-I posted this issue on the Microsoft community forum and the first reply suggested I post it here as well-

I'm having a rather unique issue with my wired 360 controller on my laptop. It used to work just fine with Steam and emulators, but somewhere along the line something has changed and I don't know what caused it. All I know is that it works fine with some
Steam games, and some don't even recognize that it's plugged in. None of my emulators recognize it anymore.

I can confirm that the controller works as even JoytoKey (which I haven't attempted using yet as it confuses me a bit) detects inputs on the controller. So I'm figuring this is a driver issue.

So after installing that Xbox 360 accessories program that doesn't seem to do a *** thing and after uninstalling the drivers for the controller, restarting my computer, and reinstalling them via plug and play, nothing has changed. Here's what shows up when
I check it in Devices and Printers.

I don't understand why two instances of an Xbox 360 controller are showing up. I'm kind of assuming that one is conflicting with the other. I've tried disabling and uninstalling one, but it comes back every time. I've been stressing over this for two days
now and could really use some help. Much appreciated.

Edit: I've also attempted two system restores to earlier dates, but that also didn't change anything. I would like to point out that these were done with the controller unplugged. I've considered that doing a restore with it plugged in may fix it, but have
    not attempted it yet.

    :)

  3. 360 play and charge kit on PC/Windows RT

There is no controller driver to download for Windows 8 because the driver is already installed as part of the Operating System. This applies to both the Desktop version of Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 8/8.1RT for Windows Surface Tablets.

If you have a wired Xbox 360 controller, just plug it in, it will work straight away. For wireless controllers you still need a wireless gaming receiver. And yes, the receiver does work with Windows 8RT.

    Hey there Contra,

Sorry to hear you're having issue with your controllers on 8.1.

As Mister Cerb said, there is most likely a compatibility issue as the Wired and Wireless Xbox controllers as it is not compatible past Windows 7.

For further assistance, I would contact
    Windows Support

Xbox 360 controller not working on Windows 8

@SlightJeans3. The Xbox 360 controller both wired and wireless (with a gaming receiver for the wireless pad) are compatible and work fine in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. There is no driver to download for Windows 8 as the driver is already installed and ready
to go for Windows 8 PC's and surface tablet devices.

I've been using mine this week to play the PC version of Skyrim. Not only that, but in the coming weeks the Xbox One controller will also be supported for Windows.

360 play and charge kit on PC/Windows RT

    Hello,

The play and charge only charges the controller, it can not turn a wireless Xbox 360 controller into a wired controller. To use a wireless controller, you will need a Wireless Gaming receiver. However, Microsoft no longer makes these devices. All the ones
being sold on the likes of websites such as eBay and Amazon are third party. They do work, but you may need to do the setup manually. If you run into issues, bookmark this

    link.
The link is for Windows 7, however the same procedure should work for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

The play and charge driver that was installed, just allows the controller to sync automatically with the receiver if you connect it up via the charging USB cable. It doesn't do anything else. Other than that, you could buy a wired controller.
