Issue with WD 1TB external hard drive.

Hey Everyone!

I recently installed a WD 1TB to my xbox one. I formated it just fine using the console and installed Gears of War Ultimate edition.

The issue i am having is that whenever i shut down the system and start it again, the xbox fails to detect the drive.

If i disconnect and reconnect the drive to the same port, it does not work.

If i connect it to a different USB, it works.

Basically, i need to disconnect and use a different usb port whenever i need to turn off or reboot.

I'm running the lastest update on it ( not a beta update )

I tried using the power saving mode ( which turns it off completly )

I tried using the quick start ( with the option to turn off hard drive ON and OFF.) makes no difference.

The drive works well besides that, i just need to disconnect and reconnect it everytime.

I did not try a factory reset on the XO, did not try to re-format the drive again.

Does anyone had the same issue? I have seen a lot of my xbox does not detect the drive period, but that's not my issue.

I don't have another drive to try to check if this is something particular to my drive.

Buying External Drive today...any recommendations?

I've had great luck with Seagate or WD external hard drives, make sure there USB 3.0 (which all the new ones are) and at least 1TB

 

External hard drive for xbox one what to you use?

Hello everyone i am curious what external hard drive for xbox one do you use and what size? I was thinking of getting a 1tb hard drive either a WD my passport ultra 3.0 or a 1tb transcend 3.0 one. thanks everyone that responds.

I'm sorry for the frustration. Which USB ports have you tried on the console? What is the model of the WD drive that you are using (Elements Portable, My Passport Ultra, My Passport X, etc.)?

I would make sure the drive is functioning properly by testing it with WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and see if it passes both the quick and the extended tests. Have in mind that the extended one takes quite a while. Here's a link to the tool:

I would try to find another drive and see if the problem persists if you use it. Contacting MS's support for this might also give you some useful options that can solve your problem.

Yesterday night, i updated the firmware on my elements portable and so far, it seems to work now.

I restarted about 4 times and the drives always shows up fine as it should. I don't want to switch any settings on my xbox yet, i want to be sure it is really fixed

Right now, it is set to turn off instead of "sleep", if it keeps working, i'll change it to sleep.

Updating the firmware of a drive can sometimes help and is an option when you encounter such problems.

My suggestion would be to go ahead and set your console up the way you would like to use it. That way if it is not fixed you will know right away so you can continue to troubleshoot. Good Luck!
