Is this a hardware issue, or do all Xbox One consoles work this way?

I bought an Xbox One at launch, and since then I have purchased around 3 dozen games. However, I haven't opened many of the games or installed them to the hard drive for two reasons:

    1) I don't generally open games that I have bought until I am actually ready to play them;

    2) Installing games is a massive hassle. My system says it is full with only 3 games installed, so I have to delete something to make room when I want to install a new game. Installing the game often takes many, many hours, and a lot of times the system will
turn off or stall during the process. I had to spend literally 24 hours just to install Rare Replay, so I couldn't even play it on launch day.

I thought for a long time that Xbox One was just really crummy compared to the competition's hardware, and that my pains were normal. I was relieved to have avoided the situation my friend had, where he bought a launch unit and its disc tray stopped opening
for him. I was grateful that the console gods were on my side. But now I'm realizing that they weren't. After checking around on Twitter, I've concluded that I own a unit that has been secretly defective since launch.

Now the Xbox One S is available, with a 2TB hard drive (which would be nice, given that I have around 30 game discs and can't have more than 3 or 4 installed on my current unit without running out of space), for less money than I paid for my Xbox One that has
never--I now suspect--actually worked properly. Obviously, I'm outside the warranty window. And while I would like to buy an Xbox One S so that I can finally play more of my games without the process being painful, I also have recently been battling health
issues that make it difficult to purchase the games I want, let alone invest in a $400 remix of a console I already bought. I can't even sell my Xbox One to apply a credit toward an Xbox One S purchase, because that doesn't feel ethical.

I'm telling you this (absolutely true and tragic) story not because I believe I am a great storyteller, but in hopes that it will inspire amazing sympathy and that you can help me out.

    :)

  2. Is this a hardware issue?

Good afternoon. Now I've had the Xbox1 since the day of release. Up to date, other than the issues pretty much everyone else has had (networking, broken games etc), I've been reasonably happy.... until recently.

Probably the sole reason I bought the new Xbox was because of Gears. I bought the Ultimate edition & was stoked to hear that I then got to play the Beta for Gears 4 early! I pre-installed the Beta & jumped in as soon as it landed... I was having graphical
issues which rendered the game unplayable. (Check out my game clips to see what was happening).

More recently, I've bought Overwatch. Again, looks an awesome game so was happy to part ways with £55 to get it. As soon as the game installed & I jumped on.... graphical issues rendering the game unplayable.

This has to be a hardware issue... right?

I would try a couple more things before sending for repair:

    1. Check your HDTV settings in the Xbox setup and run calibration. Make sure you have settings compatible with your TV - refresh rate, etc
    2. Try a different HDMI cable. Sometimes a color-cast can be a faulty cable.
    3. Where are the games stored - internal or external hard drive? If external, try moving to internal or vice-versa.

    Hey there honestgamer.

Generally long install times like that are due to network issues. If you're having 24 hour+ installs, please try disconnecting your Xbox One from the internet and install the content while offline. Once you reconnect you'll need to download updates for the
game, but your initial install should be much quicker.

    Thanks for trying to help.

I cleared up space and tried downloading a digital title just now. Though the download screen indicates that my download rate is between 3.7MB/second and 5.8MB/second, which seems pretty good to me, the process is taking much longer than it should. I seem
to be downloading around 500MB per half-hour, which means some math is definitely falling apart somewhere along the line.

I think what I'll just have to do is continue buying multi-platform titles for my PS4, which downloads everything in a snap with no issues whatsoever, and limit my future Xbox One software purchases to first-party exclusives. I've been tending in that direction
now for a while now, anyway, so it's no huge loss. I still plan to buy Forza Horizon 3 next month, for instance.

Even if my Xbox One were as good at installing games as my other systems are, though, the fact is that the hard drive doesn't offer nearly enough space for my needs (and neither does my PS4, for that matter, but at least game installs don't take very long).
I'll just have to start saving up and maybe someday I'll be able to replace my troublesome Xbox One with the Xbox One S. Have a nice day!

Enhanced games on disc n Xbox one OG

    Hi,

All Xbox one games whether on disc or digital download work on all Xbox consoles. Enhanced features only work on the One X console.

If you can't install the game on an original Xbox One, there must be a hardware issue with the console, possibly a faulty Blu-ray drive.

    Original Xbox won't read discs

    Hi,

Please do not take this the wrong way, I am all for preservation of old console hardware such as the original Xbox. However, discussions for self repair, even on 20 year old original console hardware is not allowed here. You'll need to go to some other website with your issue. There are loads of Retro Gaming enthusiasts sites.
