"I like to play games and watch movies with an Astro surround-sound headset, which decodes Dolby 5.1 audio from an optical input cable. However, the Xbox One is currently only able to output stereo and DTS Digital through its optical output. My headphone
receiver can't read DTS Digital, so I have to output in stereo, and my surround headphones turn into regular old headphones. I've been asking Microsoft for the last week if they intend to add Dolby output to the optical audio port in the near future (it's

That is not correct or is at least misleading. While the One will decode Dolby Digital (i.e. from the HDMI source), it certainly will not currently output Dolby Digital for games, TV, etc. It is 5.1/7.1 uncompressed or DTS for now.

There is not. Microsoft's implementation of surround sound in the XBox One is pretty much worthless.

Why is this an issue? Every source I use has both DTS and Dolby so it is merely a personal global choice which doesn't require an automatic switch.

I need help with this.

I run the XB1 directly to my Onkyo HTRC160. Great receiver, never had any issue with the 360 or my PS3 and sound outputting in true Dolby Digital, NOT just DTS, but true Dolby Digital, NOT PCM (uncompressed), but true Dolby Digital.

But with the XB1, and again running it to my Onkyo with HDMI, NOT optical, I only have the option for 5.1 or 7.1 uncompressed/PCM, or DTS. I was under the impression that the lack of Dolby Digital support was only on optical out and NOT HDMI.

So is Dolby Digital not supported at all, at least at this time?

Hi Phil! Sorry to hear you're having some trouble with sound. I will say that while the console IS capable of outputting in both DTS and Dolby Digital and the decoder device is capable of both, I've found it to be a bit fiddly when choosing DTS. I have a
7.1 Dolby Surround headset system connected via Optical. When I choose DTS, it is completely dead, no sound at all. As soon as I switch to Dolby Digital, it works perfectly.

You definitely want your HDMI audio to "Off," and your Optical Audio should be set to "Bitstream Out," because optical needs bitstream to deliver multiple channels - stereo is the only uncompressed option. Then, after choosing Bitstream, you want to set
your Bitstream Format to Dolby Digital, and that SHOULD work. It works on mine, but that's not a guarantee for everyone by any means.
