Is there a way to get an Original Xbox name from a Inactive account?

The gamertag system is in use on other Microsoft services, so even if they aren't actively using an Xbox, they may be active somewhere else. There's no way to know exactly how inactive an account is. The only way to free up the tag would be for them to change it to something else, or if they don't sign into their Xbox account for 5 years, it will be freed up. If they don't sign into their Microsoft account within 2 years, that would close the account which should also free up the tag. However, since the new policy where you can use a tag even if it's already in use is in place, other people are already using that tag as well. So in order to use it without the suffix, any other accounts with the tag would also have to change their tag.

As long as the name is on the servers, you cannot use it. The only way to get it would be if the original owner changes it to something else or if he does not sign in for 5 years and it gets released.

You misunderstand.

I log into the account that I changed the name from often; I only wanted to swap the name to a friend's account since I no longer play on Xbox as much. I manually changed the name the other day (for $10), and immediately upon changing it, the name seems to have reverted back to the ORIGINAL inactive account that it was on before Microsoft released inactive names in 2016 (when I got the name).

**NOTE** I had originally claimed this name in 2016 on an entirely different account (in which I still own) and had no problem swapping it from that account to the account I just changed it from. This was before the implementation of the new gamertag system. I had no problem at all. It was instantaneous.

However, in this case, the new system has somehow overwritten data somewhere and caused the gamertag to revert to the inactive original account.

I refuse to believe that this is a widespread issue with the tags that were released in 2016, as people with unique OG tags acquired at that time would be losing their minds like me.

There's no way to request a gamertag. The only way to get it (without getting a suffix added) would be for the original owner to change the tag to something else, or if they do not sign into their Xbox account for 5 years, it will be freed up by the system. If they don't sign into their Microsoft account within 2 years, that will close the account and should also free up the tag. There's no way to know for sure how inactive an account is.

You can use it, but you'll be given a suffix to differentiate you from the original owner. Otherwise, the original owner would have to change it to something else or if they don't sign into their Xbox account for 5 years, the tag will be freed up for use.
