Is the Xbox One worth buying in 2018/2019?

I suggest to you wait until this American thingy called "Black Friday" sales where I heard retailers over there have massive discounts on retail items.

I brought my Xbox 360 slim console new from an authorized retailer late 2010. And it's still working fine. That is the bonus of not buying used. If you buy used, it won't have the 12 month warranty and it could be a banned console or if things come to worse,
your account if you sign in on it, could get banned. Because Microsoft has a zero tolerance policy on modified consoles. Can you really trust the previous owners? Do you even know the previous owners of that used console? That's the risk.

Xbox One S's hardware is not respected hardware for gaming in 2018. It only has DDR3 memory, only 5GB of that is available for gaming. It is significantly weaker than the Xbox One X. Trust me, I've played Final Fantasy XV on the original and X versions.
The original looks like it was drawn by a 10 year old, but the graphics on the X looks like a million bucks. And there is very minimal hardware difference between the original and S model. And this is coming from someone who has had Xbox One before anyone
else on this forum since I live in NZ and it launched first in NZ since NZ is ahead time wise with the rest of the world. I even went to the midnight launch where EB Games had 27 stores throughout NZ open for the midnight event.

Xbox One S Xbox One X

    1.75Ghz processor 2.3Ghz processor

    8GB DDR3 @ 68GB/s (5GB available for gaming) 12GB GDDR5 @ 326GB/s (9GB available for gaming)

Air cooling Air cooling and vapour cooling

GPU clocked at 900Mhz ~ GPU clocked at 1172Mhz ~

Slightly SMALLER than the Xbox One S

    Capable of some 4k gaming

Over 100+ Xbox titles which are Xbox One X Enhanced.

However if you're on a strict budget or don't mind playing with games which look like 1990's graphics, and just play it for the games and not too fussed with lower resolutions and less detailed graphics, feel free to go with the S model.

Microsoft have said you don't need a 4k TV for Xbox One X. You'll enjoy Xbox One X Enhancements such as better graphics or fps (60fps instead of 30fps). It's like on PC. The High and Ultra graphics settings ARE NOT reserved for 4k screens only. They work
with 1080p screens too. The UI/Software on the X works better and faster than on the S, since the X has better processing power. The X hardware is more better quality and performance, which makes it more future proof than the S. There's a good reason why the
X is more expensive, it's hardware costs more. Regardless if Microsoft buys in bulk, that hardware isn't like $1 to make. It's higher performance hardware which makes Xbox One X the most powerful console hardware specs wise currently on the market. People
say it's not about the hardware. Tell that to the Sony fans who bashed the specs of the Xbox 360 and when Xbox One launched.

There currently isn't as many players on Xbox One as there were on Xbox 360 and as there are on PS4. Only a 3rd of my full friends list on Xbox 360 are active on Xbox One.

Which ever option you go for, aim to buy brand new. Used has no warranty, risk of ban, no knowledge of previous owner, and it could have scratches, excess dust through the vent wholes, or what have you.

If you want something which will "live up for a decent amount of time", the Xbox One X is the best choice, otherwise the S is good for people on a strict budget who couldn't care less about playing with 'not flashy graphics'.

Xbox One S Xbox One X

    GPU: 12 compute cores @ 900Mhz ~ GPU: 36 compute cores @ 1172Mhz

    DDR3 @ 68GB/s GDD5 @ 326GB/s

Xbox One X is more future proof than the Xbox One S. Think of it this way.... You won't feel inferior if and when Microsoft decides to release another console in the next 2-5 years. Cause the hardware on the X is still respectable and will be for some years
to come. The S model is weaker than even the original PS4 console. But the X beats the PS4 Pro in terms of rawr hardware power. I bet there's Sony fans laughing at Xbox One S's hardware specs... But when we bring up the X specs "aw aw, um, it's about the games.
It's about the exclusives". Yeah right......... Wait until PS5 comes out which still is a while away "my machine is better than yours". K, that's all I have to say for now.

Not to mention the X has 6 TFlops computing power, the S model only has 1.4TFlops compute power. The X gets things done better and faster thanks to the better processing power. O and can someone please extend the edit time we have on this forum. Do some
research before you buy, then go for the one you feel is right. Good night ^u^

  4. Is the Xbox One worth buying in 2018/2019?

    Hi,

Just thought I would to this discussion. From what I've read and understand from a technical standing - I build PC's and I'm a bit of geek with this stuff - we aren't likey to see any new generation of consoles until the end of 2020, at the very least.

Which means you can buy a new console now happy in the knowledge that won't be obsolete a few months later.

Eurogamer's 'Digital Foundry" had a great article about this very thing last month.

    https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2018-in-theory-can-a-potential-ps5-deliver-a-gener...

I get's quite technical, but a darn good read, or you can watch the YouTube video.

Guys i have a question. You say that used consoles might not last long and i understand that. However, what if i bought a used console that was only used for a very short amount of time or what if i bought a used console claimed to be in a very good condition?
Would these last any longer or not? (NOTE: Yes i am sure that people can simply lie)

  7. Why would a used console be more likely to fail than a new one? Do you think Microsoft can somehow tell if you passed on your console to a friend or sold it to a stranger and then send it a "you must die now" command? I mean I could understand the fear on
here of buying used if the Xbox One had been hacked like the Nintendo Switch has been or would be capable of being modded like the 360, yet Microsoft's security has been airtight this generation. As long as you can see the console running and connected to
Xbox Live before you buy it, then used is a perfectly viable purchasing choice.

As to the Xbox One X being more future proof, well it really isn't. Despite its increase in power the X is still part of the Xbox One generation, meaning that the games on the Xbox One X all still have to be made to run on the original Xbox One consoles. There
is a reason that games are enhanced for the X and not made specifically for it after all. Too be honest I think the midcycle updates from Sony and Microsoft this generation were a mistake, a misguided attempt to jump on the current 4k bandwagon much like
they did with motion control after the success of the Wii.

Obsessive Power raises a good point about the potential next generation of consoles. Will they be backwards compatible with Xbox One games? Hell could I be proved wrong and the One X made forwards compatible with games from whatever the next Xbox is going to
be called. Whatever happens the future is going to be an interesting one.

Ultimately there is no way to know how long a console will last whether it is used or new. So it can be hit or miss either way really. However with a new console, it is a bit easier to return it in order to exchange it for a new one or use Microsoft's warranty
if something were to happen to it. The most I would worry about with a used console is if it has been banned or could potentially be banned based on what the previous owner did. Other than that, if you're able to check it out beforehand that only other thing
I would look into is the disc drive. That was a pretty big issue with the Xbox One was first released.

The x provides noticeably better graphics. Microsoft also has over 100 titles which are x enhanced. And as Microsoft has stressed, you DO NOT need a 4k tv to enjoy those enhancements. Just like pc, you dont need a 4k screen to pipe up the graphics settings
to High or Ultra. The same with the x. It will have better visuals and thats what the youmger generation want.

Also the x has better horse power than the s, so that means faster ui purely due to the better processing and computational power of the x. Way better gpu processing faster processor. It makes life more convenient not having to wait for a slower machine
    to get things done.

As for used and new, both have their pros and cons. Even if something is used for only a short period of time, you know scratch about how the previous owner handled it and used reduces its financial value compared with new. At the end of the day it has already
been used and it lacks a full warranty that the new has.

  10. I had xbox 360 for a while, didn't manage to play a lot on it cause of school and after school activities. I <3 xbox 360. Xbox one doesn't have that many players. Most mc players on xbox one are older people, and as my bff puts it
    - "too many split screeners on xbox one mc". I used to get spammed with friend requests on xbox 360 but on xbox one it's like so boring but it's a break from receiving so many friend requests since people are IMO more interested in the game than the other
players, on xbox one. I have the xbox one x console and it's fantastic. My dad got it for me and before that I was playing on my dad's xbox one console, I think it was the first xbox one version. Xbox is kwl. I used to have a PS4 but my mum banned me from
playing on it cause too many people there sent me rude messages. So it's xbox or pc gaming though I'm not really a pro at it or anything it's something I sometimes do during my free time. I have a couple of good friends on it. Most of my friends from school
    aren't really gamers.

  11. O and I still have my 360 console too, the slim version. Aye this site only gives you like 10 seconds to edit your posts or something. I recommend the x console, it's faster and has prettier graphics. Otherwise you can go for the S model, that's still ok.
It just means your console will be slower and have less bling than the x.

What's a "youmger" generation? As an old school gamer, I know there's a generational divide between what's "kwl" and what isn't (and I do try to keep abreast of what's hot - oops! "lit" - on Twitch), but surely if you're trying to advise peeps of purchasing
decisions, you could at least be mindful of your spelling. Just sayin' Is the Xbox One worth buying in 2018/2019? ;)

As an old school Xbox fan (aka Xbot), I never thought I'd see the day when I wholesale migrated to the competition... but sadly, that's where my heart and my first-party exclusives are these days. Not even the rawr power of X can convince me to replace my
S anytime soon. A PURE WHITE (preferably 2TB) Stock Keeping Unit might help, but even then, trading up to X would mean replacing my old A/V receiver (and monitor) before getting the full benefit. And don't tell me that I'd see the difference for these 100
"X-enhanced" titles on an old school monitor. We both know that all dem pixels can only be resolved in higher resolution.

Why else would I choose to play TEN-YEAR-OLD titles if I'm not privy to the new assets? There's certainly no achievements attached, and if I'm investing time and money into NEW TITLES, or even taking advantage of sale items on the other system, then I'm
actively adding to my trophy count and that fills me with satisfaction.

Finally, you're rigorously defending the processing power of X, but if OP hasn't availed himself of 4K, then he hardly needs to be kept waiting for all those MANDATORY 4K assets to load. That's a huge benefit to buying the S... same game, less waiting time
    in the queue!

I have the Xbox One S. And I'm fine with it. Go with either one depending on your taste. I have some friends that have the X version.

But I recommend getting it new - you get the full warranty and it comes originally wrapped and unscathed, no fingerprints, no scratches, no dust trapped in the air vents from some previous owner you don't even know. There's some things worth getting new.
But you can't get new everything cause that would be too expensive. A new S console costs around $499 where I live and the X console costs $749. Those are full retail prices though.

So your asking us if you should buy an Xbox One?

    Short answer yes.

    Long answer, depends.

Basically if you do buy anything get an Xbox One X, especially if you have a 4K screen. Also, you said you bought an Xbox 360 in 2014, but then said you didn't play it much. What is stopping you buying an Xbox One and not using it much?

Also, at the moment nobody outside of Microsoft knows when the next Xbox is going to be released, it could be as early as 2019 or as late as 2021 (cant see it going past that)

basically, make up your own mind and stick with it.

You are a smart guy so I'm surprised you've asked this.

A new one is more likely to fail then a new one because it already has wear and tear, can be full of dust, can be on the verge of failing or any number of other issues. Just because you see it turned on doesn't mean anything if it dies on you in a month. Me
personally, I think buying used electronics is the wrong way to go.
