Is the first gamertag change really free?

The xbox support page about changing gamertags says:

"Follow these steps to change your gamertag. Note that the first time you change your gamertag, there’s no charge. However, there will be a small charge for all subsequent changes."

I followed the steps and I have never changed my gamertag before but it is still trying to charge me $9.99?

Free those freeze Gamertags that nobody are using it.

There are planty of Gamertag names that nobody are using it and I can't change my actual Gamertag because the GT that I want is blocked. This is not the first time this happens. Please is really important to my change my name now.

Can I have the spaces removed from my gamertag?

It is possible but you would have to change your gamertag twice at a cost of 1600 MS Points. First change it to anything else, not similar to the gamertag you want, That frees up your gamertag. Second change it to the gamertag you really want. So you have
to ask youself "Is it worth 1600 points to take out the space?" Probably not.

The gamerchange is only free for the first 30 days of an account and if the system created a random gamertag for you. If you chose your gamertag, you have to pay.

This is clearly false advertising designed to catch people off guard as it did myself. Microsoft grabbed $10 of my money but lost $100000 of my faith. Way to go microsoft.

Please check the date of the thread before posting so we don't bump an older thread. There is no false advertising going on. If you create a new account and remain with the system generated gamer tag, you can change it for free within the first 30 days
of the account creation. If you wait until after 30 days you have to pay to change. If you did stick with the system generated gamer tag and you changed it the day you created, that was your free change. Any changes afterward have to be paid for.

FYI, the free change is now available at any time, not just the first 30 days, as long as you were given a randomly generated tag.

You are allowed one free gamertag change as long as you didn't choose it yourself. So if you've been using the default gamertag when you setup your account, typically this will be a randomly generated name with numbers, your good to go, otherwise you will
need to pay to have your gamertag changed.

From PC:

Go to the Change gamertag page at account.xbox.com.
Sign in using the Microsoft account email address and password associated with your gamertag.
Enter your new gamertag, and then select Check Availability.
Once you find an available gamertag, click Claim it.

From xbox:

Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Select your gamerpic in the upper-left corner of the screen, and then press the A button on your controller
Select My profile, and then Customize profile. Select your gamertag to edit it.
You can either select one of the suggested available gamertags, or select Make my own to create your own
When you're finished, select Claim it, and then select Sounds good.
Once you see your gamertag, select Close.
