Is new gen having problems upstaging last gen?

Ok. Lets take Grand Theft Auto as an example as that has been on the last 3 generations of consoles and each represents a substantial leap in evolution.

Don't need to watch the videos all the way through, just a refrence for a quick technical observation. To see how one is clearly superior to the previous.

This is GTA 2 on the Playstation 1 generation



This GTA: San Andreas on PS2/Xbox generation



And this is GTA V on the 360/PS3 generation



I mean think of the huge sacrifices that would be needed to make GTA V run on the original Xbox machine. Or San Andreas to run on the PS1! The game would have to be top down view for PS1 among many many other sacrifices!

But now look at the "makeover" version of GTA V on the new gen systems



Is it me or are the new systems just not representing a great substantial technical advancement? Is this really what new gen is going to be.....old gen with the 1080p 60fps cloth rubbed over it?

Rise of the Tomb Raider is coming to 360. Destiny is out on 360. Titanfall is out on 360. Far Cry 4 is coming to 360. The next upcoming CoD game is coming to 360. Mortal Kombat X is coming to 360. Dragonage: Inquisition is coming to 360. The Evil Within
coming to 360. There does not seem to be any end in sight.

Some of these games are like a year off still from release. Metal Gear Solid 5 is 360 bound.

Honestly asking everyone, have you actually played a new gen game yet that has shown any kind of substantial leap from Xbox 360? In the way that GTA V lept from San Andreas?

New horror game is on it's way to the 360 end of the month, nice to see developers are still interested in last gen having a bigger core audience then the current gen.

 

I honestly hope this is the last generation of "gaming consoles".

For me, I buy next-gen as I love to play games.

I cannot stand not having the newest "big game" due to being on last-gen consoles.

 

I don't care. I just play the games.

 

Zoo Tycoon and Minecraft both look and perform better on Xbox 1 than Xbox 360. Xbox 1 you can load a large world from scratch in only about 12 seconds and large worlds are about 36x bigger than the worlds on Xbox 360. Plus it takes only 1 second to save
where as 360 it takes a couple of seconds Xbox 1 has bigger and faster drawing distances and more mobs capacity. BF4 Kinect Sports Rivals look very good. Minecraft Xbox 1 is 1080p 60fps so who says there are no 1080p 60fps games on Xbox 1? Plus I play games
for fun. I don't get out a magnifying glass to do a pixel to pixel comparison. Sure this gen's games library is not as big as last gen only cuz the system isn't even 12 months old yet.

Sure Xbox 1 is still missing some Xbox Live features from last gen but they could be brought back through updates and since M put up an official feedback site which they are listening to feedback. Xbox 1 has certainly more in terms of Xbox Live features
now compared to when it launched 22/11/2013.

If they are so much cross gen games,it's because 1st & 3 rd party devs can still makes good version on last gen system (and make money),and they can improve them on next gen system.

I don't have any problem with that.....Maybe because i own a "next gen" system and enjoy it.

 

Instead of trying to compare what a game looks like that is available for both generations.. you may want to ask yourself... for the ones made only for "nex gen ~ X1", would they be able run the same on "last gen ~ 360" answer is.. probably not... games
that were made for both have to be similar...the 360 gamers that still want the new titles are actually holding the nex gens back... once support for the last gen goes away and the majority have switched over.. and the tech gets to the point that making a
new AAA game for last gen is not worth it... we can then revive this thread

Are you saying its the fault of the gamers that there are no new true proper next gen games coming out?

It's our fault for not investing in a new system that has not yet proved itself as a true next gen system for the lack of state of the art games?

 

ITs all about the $ last gan market share is huge 80 million X360 and 80 million PS3 vs about 15 million next gen system. once Next gen gets to about 20 or 30 million is when last gen will be cut.

 

next gen = next generation = next in line of a product

Not sure who thought nex gen would me magical filled with pixie dust and the future...

and yes, I believe people who have not taken the jump forward yet are holding back this gen...

Lets say I develop a game.. I have 100 people on my team.. 50 for X1 and 50 for 360.. now if the % of those are on the X1, would I waste 50/50 for both gens or leave the older dying gen out and put full resources into next gen....

Just because you personally hate this next gen and have had zero positive things to say about it.. why should those of us that moved on suffer because you would rather play on an older dying machine?

It's no different than the iphone. I can go back to my older phone and use it without any problem because even though it's an old phone, it still does almost everything my newer iphone does. There comes a point where something has been improved to a point
where upgrades are not really that noticeable anymore.

I've been playing GTAV to death and the graphics are beautiful to me. I really can't envision them being any better than they look to me at this point. Maybe in the X1 version the cars will have a teensy bit more shine to them? Maybe the grittiness of
the brick buildings will have a bit more clarity? Maybe I'm easy to please at this point in gaming history. I think most games look good. Some people get so ocd about graphics I wonder if they are ever really enjoying their games at all.

 

Agreed, Mantis. Technology has come a long way since the beginning of the games industry, and now the changes are more iterative than groundbreaking...

 

OK, so why did you choose to show us GTA V for the 360/PS3, instead of GTA IV, which released much earlier in the last console cycle? Probably because GTA IV did not look nearly as good as GTA V did. These consoles are brand new, and the games coming out
for them are not going to look as good as the games 5 years from now will. Developers just haven't gotten familiar enough with the technology.

As for why games are still being released on both generations, it's very simple. There are nearly 200 MILLION people who have a 360/PS3. There are about 15 million people with an X1/PS4. The large audience means more people will probably buy your game on
the older console, thus netting you more profit than what would be available if you only released on current gen consoles.

 

Can we stop calling this gen "next gen" please. The consoles have been with us a good while now. They are probably working on next gen consoles as we speak.
