Is my Xbox dying or is it just being temperamental?

For a few months now i have noticed that my 360 has been getting slower and slower. It's mainly on start-up that you can mainly tell as it can take up to 5 minutes to move on from the logo. I've tried to speed it up by deleting unnecessary stuff from my
HDD but if anything it has gotten slower.

I have been able to live with this as it worked fine after that it was just a little slower to perform tasks than i would like, but lately the disc tray has been refusing to open or read discs, and then when it does decide to open so i can check if the disc
is fine it refuses to shut!! If and when it does close the process just repeats which is incredibly frustrating as it means i can't play a physical game. It's like a teenager that refuses to wake up and then won't do what it's asked!

It's an Xbox 360 Elite that i got in early 2009 so it's just over 5 years old, i was wondering if it's on it's last legs and i should be thinking about getting a newer one but i really don't want to do this if i don't have to.

You could try couple of things first, delete of of your cache.

1) Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings.

2) Select Storage or Memory.

3) Highlight any storage device, and then press Y on your controller. (It doesn't matter which storage device you select; the cache will be cleared for all storage devices.)

4) Select Clear System Cache.

5) Click on yes.

If that doesn't work, try to remove your hard drive and try to play the game. If it loads normally then yea you need a new hard drive. If not, then it is the lens of the disc reader which would also mean you need to send it to repair..

It could possibly be dying. If you have the money I would definitely think about investing in one of the newer 360's. My recommendation would be the 250gb 360 slim N model.

 

Your Hard Drive can become slower over a period of time even if you "delete" stuff off your hard drive. When ever you delete something its still there except its marked as not being there. And after it can slow down your hard drive like a old car loosing
horse power over time. I suggest you to remove your hard drive while the xbox is off and then see if your case is any better if not then another possibility could be your internet. when ever you turn your xbox on and its hooked up it will pre load all your
dashboard content and depending on your internet it could take time If the hard drive suggestion does not work I suggest you to unplug your ethernet cord or wireless adapter to your xbox and then start your console and see it loads any faster.
