Is modifying controllers legal?

I've seen companies modify Xbox controllers and sell them. I'm curious whether they've asked for Microsoft's consent. Assuming Microsoft allowed you to modify the controllers and sell them, would you have to pay a partial amount of the sale to Microsoft?

Reason being, I'm a 15 year old who's interested in making a little bit of money. I don't intend to add "rapid fire modifications" or anything like that, merely alter the aesthetics of the controller. Paint it, add custom LED's, all of that. But I don't
want to go ahead and do this, and get caught committing a crime, or whatever.

Modded controllers

Microsoft allows licensed controllers that do not follow the standard controller layout. That I'm aware of, all licensed non-standard controllers (like Mad Catz MW3 controller) are wired, not wireless.



Modifying a genuine Microsoft 360 controller is prohibited as per the Terms of Use.

 

Why areb't modded/rapid fire controllers a bannable offense?

Modifying controllers and modifying consoles are two COMPLETELY different things. The controller is modified seperately from the console. It is more difficult to edtect a modified controller than a console. However, it is possible. I'm sure that Microsoft
doesn't have software to do it, but if it is used in-game and someone files a complaint or an Xbox Staff Member see's it, they will ban them for a decided amount of time.

 

they don't do anything about it since the modder buy and sell real Xbox controllers.

If they started using knock off cheapish ones, things would change.

dunno how your gonna make money doing it, gotta be 500+ different sellers on ebay doing the same thing.

 

And a vast majority of that 500+ are successful.

But that's eBay. What if I branch out into a reliable network selling high end controllers?

only if you can push out allot of volume. there was a time I made lots of money on ebay. but with ebay & paypal fee's constantly raising there is no profit left when your done.

 

Waste of time now for modifying 360 controllers. If you plan on doing it, focus instead on PS4 and XBOne controllers. Volume is only going to go up.
