Is less actually more?

With games like Rust, Dayz and Minecraft becoming more and more popular it makes me wonder, "Can less actually be more?".

No mans sky will be less but more(endless).

Minecraft 360 edition has been boring without updates lately but I will start a new world after tu14.

 

Ya, the problem with minecraft 360 is that it is too limited. If it were closer to the PC version (which I believe the xbox one version will be), it would be even more popular. The maps are way too limited and there isn't nearly enough "customization".
I can't believe they didn't offer more with how popular it became.



I'm not sure what no mans sky is, but I will look into it.



I'm also looking into building my first gaming PC for a few different games ($800ish not including peripherals) and building my gf a cheaper gaming PC strictly for games like minecraft.

 

Also 4j( devs of minecraft xbox 360,one,ps3,ps4) are too busy to do alot of work on one console alone.

I hope they use cloud power foe xbox one edition.

Minecraft is pretty much limitless, so it wouldn't have less content than other games, although depending on the person it might.

Less graphically clear. Less money to make?

 

Games like minecraft, dayz and rust are so simple. It's like giving a kid a box of legos and some army men and letting them use their imagination. This isn't meant to be negative, I think it works in their favors. I think the other part of it is a "co-op"
niche that is currently lacking on all consoles. People can play these games with friends. There is no real objectives, there is no real story, you are not bound to anything, they are just open worlds that you can do what ever you want with.

[/quote]Less can be more, but it is usually less when it comes to games, if a game is unique it will stand out from the crowd and will do relatively well on a console where being unique is in the minority...

 

Well, I'd say there's more gameplay in Minecraft than what you find in some games.

 

I don't really think Rust or DayZ can be considered "less"... They have huge maps with upwards to 150 people playing on one map at a time.

 

DayZ has no story, no missions, no leveling system, one set of weak enemies...need I say more?



Rust is similar to Dayz except the enemies are a little stronger and I have seen two types of enemies instead of one.

What makes minecraft simple is the lack of a story and of course the graphics play a part. Now a days so many people mindlessly complain about how a game is only 720/900p with what I would I consider to be great graphics....yet you can put out a game like
minecraft and it breaks all kinds of records.

Again, this isn't intended to be negative towards these games.

 

Minecraft is fun because as it turns out, people like building stuff. You get this giant piece of land and well, you just start making stuff and before you know it you have 3 friends with you and it's midnight and you're talking about everything under the
sun and having a great time. Minecraft is a simple, brilliant game that proves that graphics are and will always be secondary to a well thought-out gameplay.

100% agree.

What I'm getting at is the simplicity of a game like minecraft can actually lead to more entertainment than other games with intensive leveling systems, complex stories, and 1080p/60 fps. Give me a few types of blocks with no real objective and I can have
have fun for hours upon hours. It's the grown up version of legos.

I think this is part of the reason COD is so successful. There aren't alot of games out their where you can jump on and chitchat and bullshi around. CODs party/matchmaking systems makes this very easy to do. COD is great because of it's simplicity. It's
easy to get party up, it's easy to get in a match, it's easy to kill enemies, the rank up system is very straight forward, ect. There seems to be two ways to have very successful games. 1) Create a mind blowing indepth game with a million things to do like
skyrim, red dead redemption or GTAV. 2) Create a simple game that anyone can play based off of a few great concepts. i.e. minecrafts building/crafting or COD casual shooter with a great engine/addictive leveling and reward system.
