Is it safe to leave external SSD on all the time?

I just bought Samsung 860 EVO 1 TB SSD for my Xbox One. I bought an SSD enclosure with it so I could externally hook it up to my Xbox. I was wondering if it’s safe to keep my SSD plugged into my Xbox when I turn it off (Xbox in sleep mode/instant
on mode not really off). There’s a blue light on the SSD enclosure that stays on even when I turn my Xbox off (still instant on mode) so I assume that the SSD is still on. Will any damage occur to my SSD if I leave it plugged in all the time? Thanks.

    :)

Rise of the Tomb Raider only starts with DLC installed, if console is switched offline.

If anyone is interested, we managed to find that the problem only occurs if the game is installed on an external ssd.

If the game is moved from the ssd to the internal hdd the problem does not occur. Formating the ssd and moving the game back did not fix the problem. Other games launch fine from the external ssd.

The problem seems to be linked to (external?) ssds and (Rise of the Tomb Raider?) DLCs.

I just checked Killer Instinct (with some DLC) on the external ssd and it worked without problems so...

the problem seems to be linked to external(?) ssds and Rise of the Tomb Raider DLCs.

  4. Is it safe to leave external SSD on all the time?

    Hi,

I can't see how it would be unsafe. SSD's contain no moving parts. While SSD's will degrade slowly over time with data being overwritten, they don't degrade by just being on, or from constant reading.

You probably leave your phone on all the time, they contain the same type Nand Flash SSD drives use.

    Hiya, Mowaqas6969!

Paul from Xbox Forums Team here to assist with the issue, with the current question about safety concerns with the external SSD. The ambassadors information is correct it should be fine to leave the SSD on while plugged into the Xbox One console. If you
have any further questions about the external SSD I would recommend contacting Samsung to see if they have any recommendations.

    Happy Gaming!

    SSD for External Drive?

I am using a 500GB SSD with an external USB 3.0 case and would buy it again.

The performance increase is very noticable and for games like Forza unvaluable.

Leaving games with no loading time on the internal drive and moving games with many loading times to SSD is the key ! :)

Is it safe to leave a seagate external hard drive plugged in all the time(Xbox One)?

Thanks for your response. It is plugged in with a 3.0 usb cord to one of the usb ports in the console. Is that okay? Thank you.
