I have done this for yrs since the vhs player came out lol. I use a nice thick plastic like from a picnic table cover. I been taught this from my parents cause they and I smoke, and cigarette smoke is a big no no for
any type of electronics, smoke and dust mixed causes alot of problems.

I repair pc's and other type of electronics and let me tell you what a gross mess it causes inside pc cases. Sticky gross wires and components are not fun to work with.

So yes its safe and a good habit to have.

Absolutely true. I was in the PC and electronic devices upgrade and service industry for awhile and you could guess with nearly 100% accuracy which devices were in environments
where people smoked. We could literally scrape layers of brownish yellow gunk from HDD cases, wires, PS housings... not to mention how the CPU fans would clog with it... and yet so many people just couldn't understand why they constantly needed to have their
    device(s) serviced or replaced.

Therefore, I'd say for those who have their XboxOnes in a smoking environment, it probably would be a good idea to cover it when not in use (as long as it's completely off)...
not to mention reduce smoking when it is in use if that's possible.

  2. I nearly burned my house down when I was a kid because I tried to cook french fries in grease without knowing how to do it properly. Thankfully, there was no fire, but there was plenty of smoke that covered everything in the house with a residue that lasted
for weeks, so I can definitely attest to what these guys are talking about. Fire-fighters told me that the pot was less than 5-seconds from flash-point when they got to it (flash-point = instant fireball explosion). I'll never forget that night and neither
will my family, unfortunately. They won't let me cook french fries unless I bake them...

Is it safe to cover your XBOX ONE?

I did have thoughts of covering the One when I got it, but it's on almost 24/7 so that's out. I pull my console from the entertainment center every two weeks or so and use a vacuum hose with a clean brush on the end to clean the vents. I wouldn't ever blow
compressed air into a gaming consoles' case. See the
    manual
    for more.

or just give the Xbox a wipe over with a microfiber cloth just before turning it on, then it reduces the crap going in when on.

  6. ^ That's pretty much what I do. A dust cloth. Would love to know where all the scratches on my console have come from though :/ lol

@KLRSKIR - The manual says not to use compressed air?

I've built gaming PC's for decades and have used compressed air to clean consoles, PC's and just about every other electronic device that has fans or can be prone to overheating without ever having an issue caused by using compressed air.

As was previously stated with smoking even humidity in the air can cause the dust to clump and become a nasty mess. As long as the console has multiple vents on the case you'll remove dust from inside the console with air. It's not as efficient as breaking
open a PC to clean it but it'll definitely make a difference.

Dusting the outside is purely for appearance. Vacuums are a huge no-no, they are prone to holding static charges from vacuuming carpet, furniture, etc and if you touch your console with it you could have a new doorstop.

    I use this
    www.amazon.com/.../ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_1
and the 1000 plus reviews on Amazon would agree with me that it works. Most compressed air cans have a bittering agent added to it which can leave a film so the above is a much better option and cheaper in the long
    run.

    I have been a Radar Tech for better than 25 years. With that being said;

Vacuums are fine to use. As long as you have a plastic tip on the wand, your okay.

    -

Compressed air on electronics is fine as well. Unplug it before using the air.

The manual does state "do not use compressed air." Compressed air is fine IF the case can be opened and the clumps can be vacuumed out completely, such as a tower cpu case. Laptops and especially consoles, not so much.

Also, you will never have a static spark jump from plastic to plastic. Definitely a good idea to take any shoes and/or socks off. Is it safe to cover your XBOX ONE? ;)

@Cloud even a microfiber cloth will scratch that glossy finish. At this point, I am keeping the scratches going the same direction. lol

  10. Light surface scratching is one of the prices we pay for this 21st century piano black finished world we live in. Whatever happened to solid dirty grey plastic and cartridges? RIP 1990 - 1999.

  11. Dynamic the case for the slim 360 I had was awesome (black standard plastic). Never in the years of its use did it ever look dirty. Would choose that material over gloss any day of the week.

KLR Lol! I am past the point of no return for that, its like I could play noughts and crosses.

  12. The best way is to take off the cover and use compressed air on it, but that would of course void the warranty and you definitely don't want to do that because it sounds like at some point everyone is going to have to send their tricky little machine in
    for servicing.

If I remember correctly and I believe mine does this. The fan is still on when in standby mode I still feel heat 3 hours later coming out and is still on. I wouldn't do it. If its off off with the orange light on id say wait a little to be safe but that's
    me till I cover it.
