My issue isn't even with them asking to use your Windows Live ID to confirm your identity.

It is that they access and use your account.

They claim not to retain the information relating to your WLID but they certainly do for long enough to spam your friends list. All it would take is one disgruntled staff member and they'd have a mass of stolen accounts.

If you use the power saving mode, I don't see why covering it would be a problem as the console is completely off when powered down, aside from a little trickle of electricity so that the console can check for you pressing the power button on the controller.

I would be a bit dubious about using it in the "instant on" (or whatever it's called) mode though as in that state, it's never truly off. In that instance, I would leave it uncovered and maybe use a can of compressed air from time to time to blast any dust
out of the insides and the vents.

The Xbox One has temperature sensors inside it that ramp the fans up accordingly and power the console down to prevent damage if it gets too hot, but I'm paranoid about such things failing and effectively cooking the machine.

 

Personally I'd be a little wary that you're just trapping air inside and not letting the air disperse in it's own time. As already said, if you want to keep it clean just give it a wipe down or blow over once in a while. A little dust won't hurt it and a
very good point was raised that most of the dust will collect and circulate whilst it's on anyway.

 

If you are going to cover it up at least turn it off from the wall.

 

Personally, I just rub a dust cloth over mine when it looks a bit thick and dirty. Trouble is, the gloss will always look a bit filthy unless you give it a really good 'wax on wax off style' clean lol. (Note, that is a quote from a movie, I am not suggesting
you wax your machines). The console is designed to remain intact for a long period of time so I am sure so long as it is well ventilated it will be just fine

The dust on the outside is the least of your worries but can be a good judge on how often to clean the inside. Dirty fans decrease cooling which in turn causes the console to overheat which can lead to failure.

I have dogs so my consoles and PC are cleaned weekly with what is basically a leaf blower designed for electronics ( can of compressed air works fine but avoid the ones with the bittering agent it can leave a film ).

As someone else stated the majority of the damage is being done when the console is on and sucking in dusty air for cooling and you definitely don't want to cover it while it's on.

 

Blowing your breath on the console to remove dust would be a horrible idea because chances are your saliva might short something out on the motherboard. A can of compressed air might do the trick.

Ahh the NES cartridge. If ever a game could be used as a door stopper, it was a NES cartridge. Still remember how big they were when I had one of those. By all accounts, a fantastic system to play games on. Yeah I need to get a can of compressed air without

I have done this for yrs since the vhs player came out lol. I use a nice thick plastic like from a picnic table cover. I been taught this from my parents cause they and I smoke, and cigarette smoke is a big no no for any type of electronics, smoke and dust
mixed causes alot of problems.

I repair pc's and other type of electronics and let me tell you what a gross mess it causes inside pc cases. Sticky gross wires and components are not fun to work with.

So yes its safe and a good habit to have.

 

Smoke? I never would of guessed that! Luckily I smoke outside but thats useful info to know. Lol Dynamic, your room sounds like mine. Its like living in an ash cloud or something isnt it :/

 

I just take a few pieces of tape (any kind that won't leave a sticky residue) and use it to remove the dirt, dust, and other debris off of the console, much like you can with clothes.
