Is backward compatibility ready to go?

If any of you have tried putting an Xbox 360 game disc into your Xbox One you will know that it comes up with the following error message:

"Sorry, we cannot play this disc. Try an Xbox One game, a music CD or a movie on Blu-Ray or DVD."

I just put a 360 game in the Xbox One, just out of curiosity, and that error message is gone! The disc spins and reads for a moment, then stops, but no error message?

Could be nothing. But it could be something!

    :)

Is backward compatibility ready to go?

Would be nice, but didn't they say the One has a different framework than the 360.

Definitely not, you can not play a HD-DVD (360 Disc format) in a Blu-ray drive (X1 Disc format). That's far from the only obstacle either.

In my opinion if they do develop backwards compatibility, it will be on an emulator (software app) and would probably be similar to Sony's version by streaming over the internet.

There's many issues around this, such as it'll probably be a paid service, there's no way they're going to give you ALL the games you owned on the 360 for free, digitally, that's just impossible.

I can see why when decidng upon this, pre-launch, it was an easy no way it's not economical.

Also, I played quite a few original xbox backwards compatible games on 360, I know it was a waste of time... they spend a lot of cash to do each game individually only for people to stop using it entirely 1/2 years in.

The 360 does not use HD-DVD's, it uses regular dual-layer DVD's. It had the HD-DVD player add-on years ago, but that tech failed. The X1 could read 360 DVD's just fine, but it wouldn't be able to process the code since it's completely different.

A software emulator could be used but would tax the hardware... plus the discs might be readable due to the player used... I sincerely doubt MS will BC.... There is really no money in it for them.

@Lestat573 - yea I always thought it was HD-DVD, thanks for correcting that. Same issue as OG Xbox / 360 then, they could make it work on a game to game basis.

  9. They are working on an emulator for BC. They're just figuring out a way to incorporate it into the Xbox One.

Redesigning a game for the new system and re-releasing it, is not backwards compatibility.

We will see tons of re-releases throughout the life of the X1 no doubt.

EDIT: And after seeing the reception success for TMCC, I suspect we will see more collections just like this.

  13. Is backward compatibility ready to go?

The hardware in the xbox one isn't powerful enough to emulate the power pc based architecture that the xbox 360 uses.
