    Is a paid subscrition to Xbox Live necessary to play Xbox online Multiplayer games?


    To play xbox multiplayer online games (e.g. Forza Motorsport 7 or Rocket League), is a paid subscrition to some Xbox Live necessary, or will my free Microsoft / Xbox account login work?
    Background: I'm a PC gamer, thinking about buying a Xbox One X or S. But paying a monthly fee for multiplayer online gaming is a deal breaker for that.

    If you are playing online multiplayer games on Xbox console, you will need an Xbox Live subscription.

    However, this cost is offset by other perks. Microsoft gives you 4 free games a month (totaling over $600 of free games) and weekly discounts on a variety of games just for having the subscription.

    As previous ambassadors have mentioned, an Xbox Live subscription is a requirement in order to play online on an Xbox console.

    Also as previously mentioned, the Microsoft Rewards program is a great way to save big on some of our services such as
    Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold.

    Last but not least, the subscription also offers things like deals with gold, and
    games with gold to aid with deals and free Xbox titles at the click of a button. Those games will belong to your account and can be accessed as long
    as the account has Xbox Live.

    A gold subscription is required in order to play online. If Microsoft Rewards is available in your area, you can use that to get gold for free, but normally it is paid for. It typically is cheaper to buy prepaid cards online than buying straight from Xbox.
