    IP address error


    Hi there,

    when when I run "test Xbox live connection" I get the error message "the router or modem may not be set up to provide ip addresses..."

    i have aver tried recommended solutions but with no success. When I go into "configure network" there is a number for the IP address however both DNS servers are 0.0.0.0

    also just to note I have an x-box one which is fine when signing in to live.

    an AUTO IP, or a link-local address, which has the address range of 169.254.x.x

    Is your failing console directly connected to the router?

    Are you connecting your console with an Ethernet cable, or wireless with your console?

    Hi,

    Thanks for responding.

    My console is connected to my router via Ethernet cable, I can't remove this in order to test my wireless network.

    I've tried most of the common solutions, restore to factory settings, reset router etc.

    I have no problem with getting online with my X-Box one.

    If its possible, can you try connect your Xbox 360 with a different Ethernet cable, to determine If the current cable you're using may have become defect, which can cause the electrical signal to degrade.

    I have tried another Ethernet cable to no avail.

    Tried manually entering IP address and other info still will not work.

    I was disconnected during a thunderstorm and since haven't been able to connect.

    As a last attempt, and if you haven't already, can you try connect your console to a different LAN port on your router as well.

    If this step is to no avail, I think it's safe to say that the Ethernet network adapter is defect, and that you should submit an online repair request. That is if you prefer this connection method, and don't have an alternative solution (wireless).

    Go to the Xbox Online Service Center

    Ok thanks for this! I have tried but also doesn't work.

    I have wireless and would like to try it but I cannot remove the Ethernet connection to try the wireless. Even when it's unplugged it states a Ethernet is still present!

    From what you've described, it definitely points to a genuine hardware error with your console's network adapter.

    Okay, ChimpZealot. This is what is said for each suggestion on More Info...

    IP Address Error - The router or modem may not be automatically assigning an IP address. Try a static IP address instead.

    IP Address Error - The router or modem may not be set up to provide IP addresses. See the routers or modem's manual for steps to adjust DHCP settings.

    Hey Vesper, have you tried restoring your system to factory defaults?

    Does your console connect just fine connecting directly to the modem instead of the router?

    How about Manual IP settings?

    First let's look at your PC's settings.

    If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7: Click Start, type cmd in the search box, and press Enter. If you are using Windows XP: Click Start, click Run, type in CMD, and press Enter.

    At the prompt, type: ipconfig, and press Enter.

    Find your network connection (for example: "Local Area Connection"), and write down the following information:

    IPv4 Address

    Subnet Mask

    Default Gateway

    Make up a unique IP address for your Xbox. (For example: if your PC's address is 192.168.1.1, choose 192.168.1.11 for your Xbox.).

    Note: Each IP address on your network must be unique.

    Now go to your Xbox.

    Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings.

    Select Network Settings, and then Configure Network.

    On the Basic Settings tab, select IP Settings, then Manual, and then IP Address.

    Enter the unique IP address that you created, and click Done.

    Select Subnet Mask, enter your PC's subnet mask, and then click Done.

    Select Gateway, enter your PC's default gateway, and then click Done.

    Click Done again to complete.

    Press B on your Xbox controller, and retest your connection.

    If manually assigning an IP address works, we know it's an issue with DHCP on your router.
