internal network issue with the XB1 when its turned off!

Since the first of Aug it appears as though I am having some network issues with the XB1. The XB1 is on a 5 port 100MB switch with my Cable set top box, TV, and a few other items, and this switch is plugged into the ISP's Modem/Switch.

Issue is as follows: at times the set top box for the Cable TV starts pixelating as if its being starved for bandwidth. If I unplug the XB1 from the switch the issue clears up, I have also found that the issue clears up just by turning on the XB1.

So what is the XB1 doing, network wise, when its turned off that could be completely utilizing the switches resources?

    :)

    Xbox One Automatic Annoying Updates

Seems like its either not downloading the updates while you have the XB1 off or you are leaving it on in which case its not going to update until you turn it off your message isnt entirely clear in that regard. Considering you said you "normally do not turn my Xbox One however"

If you turn the XB1 off with auto update on it will update. If you dont turn the XB1 off it will never auto update you will have to manually do it.

Auto Update is a feature that is used when the Xbox is off but still in that low lower state. It doesnt work when the XB1 is on.

  3. Xbox one when its turned off

So every night when I turn my xbox off a few hours after I hear the sound it makes when you eject a disc. No one is using my xbox at night and I hear it multiple times through out the night. Any idea what it could be its weird

I'm wondering if this could be due to having your console set to instant on mode. When in this mode on a nightly basis the console will search for system updates. Is your issue happening all the time or sporadically? I would try bypassing your switch with
the Xbox one, and plug into the modem/router direct.

The issue is sporadic and the instant on mode the current. My modem/router is actually in a wiring closet, so its not really feasible to plug directly into it, I would have to switch over to the wireless mode.

The strange part here is if the XB1 unit is switched on when this is happening, the bandwidth issue immediately goes away and can be brought back just by turning the unit off again. Now if the issue was due to updates being downloaded, the updates would
not stop midstream just because I turned the unit on would they?

I will try turning the instant on mode off to see what happens. I appreciate the feedback.

  6. This all does sound a bit odd to me honestly. If your console is set to instant on mode, then sure certain times of the night bandwidth will be used. Those updates will happen while the console is in the standby state, meaning when you go to turn it on it
will be set to go. I'm curious have you paid attention to the power brick when this issue has happened in the past? Is the light there Orange? Maybe to make it simple were you able to use the Xbox on voice command? If not the console had recently updated,
same would be true if the Light on the PSU was orange. Now as to why Turning the console on resolves this excess bandwidth usage, If I'm honest I'm baffled. It would seem as though turning on the console would in fact start using data at a faster rate then
when the console is in standby mode. You after all are using bandwidth to show the adds and things on the dashboard(likely very miniscule amounts of data usage but nonetheless usage), This obviously will increase if you start playing online or engage in streaming
of any kind. I would still suggest trying to turn the instant on mode off as a point of comparison. Then after testing that way possibly even trying connected via wifi, with instant on mode enabled as well as disabled. Do you have a wireless laptop that has
a bandwidth monitor on it? If so you could share the laptops connection to the Xbox and then monitor it to ensure it is the Xbox that is in fact causing the Bandwidth spikes

That will help guide you set that up. Sorry for the Wall of Text, Im also going to PM someone with more knowledge then myself with Networking so hopefully we can at least try to get to the bottom of your issue.

Thanks for the additional feedback. So turning the "instant on" off has cleared up the symptoms. Now, I would still like to figure out why; I hate unexplained situations.

Since the switch is unmanaged I can't just port mirror and use a sniffer app to see what is going on. but you have a good idea, if I were to setup a laptop and share the connection, then I could use WireShark to capture the traffic.

Xbox ONE deliivered!...Few questions before hook up/

I am sure you can turn on and record while the XB1 is off.. the pass through is for display only and you do not need that to record internally...as long as your DVR cable box is ON...it will record... as its input in unaffected by the pass through...
