Intermittent Loud Fan Noise

Occasionally when playing games the fan will get noticeably loud (a phone app suggested
around 40-50 decibels) for a few seconds, with the fan revving up to this level multiple times for a sustained period. This has occurred most often when playing games that are Xbox One X Enhanced, in Dishonoured 2 and Astroneer it happens after a few minutes
(I've yet to test others as the noise is worrisome). When playing Battlefield 1 the fans remained quiet, they did however get loud when playing Assassin's Syndicate after a 15 minutes and in Elex (the enhanced patch is not yet available) after 5 minutes. When
using apps such as BBC iplayer and youtube the fans remain quiet.

My main concern is that the console is not cooling properly when under load.

My TV is not 4K, and the console is set horizontally, the vents are not obstructed.

Disc Drive spins really fast when 360 is turned off

It's definitely the disc because the noise stops when I eject the tray. It's hard to know whether ejecting the disc before shutting down makes any difference because the problem is so intermittent, but the volume of noise seems unlikely to be coming from
the fan - it's *really* loud. It sounds like one of those old 40x or 50x CD-ROM drives they used to put in PCs.

 

Xbox One X Fan sounds way louder than usual

Ok I moved it and it has not shut off sense but the Xbox One X Fan noise is not constant and is still loud maybe not as loud as a jet engine like I describe before but still loud way louder than my Xbox One S and OG Xbox One, it would have a fan burst
when I'm playing which is loud and annoying and the fan noise would never be at a constant noise level while I'm playing a game.

 

Been playing Middle Earth Shadow of War on Xbox One X and getting loud fan noise in the same manner you describe - 3 seconds high revving, 3 seconds of quiet, 3 seconds high revving, 3 seconds of quiet, and keep repeating. I thought it was a wind effect
in the game initially it was so loud. I was playing at 4k resolution, set horizontally on a shelf, no obstruction on any side/top/rear.

Spoke to Microsoft Support just now who said it shouldn't be happening. Did a console reset with them and was still the same. So they said to arrange an exchange with the Microsoft Store (where I bought it) - they still have some Project Scorpio edition
in stock for the exchange, otherwise Microsoft would take it directly to repair/investigate etc.

I must say Support were really helpful in every way!

Tried getting help from Game.co.uk who I ordered from, but after 25 minutes being on hold whilst calling their support line, gave up and contacted Microsoft. MS have arranged for the console to be collected and sent for repair/exchange no idea how long it
will take + got to find a box to ship it in (not allowed to use original box).

They gave me 2 options:

The first option is to get the advance exchange process which is no initial charge (credit card hold only – hold for full retail value plus tax is not a charge; however, it may affect your available balance until the hold is removed).
Charges apply if non-functioning items are not returned; We will send you a replacement. Use the packing material from the replacement device to return your non-functioning item. If your non-functioning device is not returned to Microsoft within 15 days, you
will be charged full retail value (plus tax) of a new device.

The second option is same unit repair which the process is, once non-functioning unit is received, it will be inspected and a repair will be attempted. If a repair is not possible, it will be replaced with a similar device.

Having already bought one, I went with option 2

Good thing that I did not trade in my original Xbox One.

 

Same here. Microsoft support are doing an advanced exchange. Not impressed that they say it can take up to 28 days.
