Interesting Article In Popular Mechanics Related To Live

Yesterday I went to a local high school in my capacity as substitute teacher. As most of you know, that means I sit around and attempt to keeps kids from acting like fools. Since I do this quite a bit for the science department, I have learned to amuse
myself by reading the various magazines laying around in the classrooms. I picked up the January, 2013, issue of Popular Mechanics. As I was scanning thru the magazine, I came across an article on page 47. What follows is a summary:

• On August 11th, 2011, a 911 phone is received from a town in eastern Pennsylvania. A young kid tells the operator that his dad has killed his sister. The call comes thru something called an "Internet Relay Service". The police arrive only to find no
  such event had occurred.
• What had occurred is that the oldest son had been playing on Live on his 360. He apparently got another player mad and that player "jacked into his Live profile" and was somehow able to to use the player's billing info to route this fake call thru this
  "Relay" service.

So, I am curious: I am assuming that the termed "jacked" is being used in the sense of "hacked"...which makes me wonder how a random player is able to access a Live account without either the email or password. Cause according to 12 years of MS dogma,
that is impossible. How did this happen? According to this article it is quite a common event.

Is this related to the "ip stealing" thing I have read about so much here?

I didn't have a chance to read all of it, but I did look at the numbered titles. When I read number 4 & 5, I immediately thought of Kingdoms of Amular. If you're not familiar with it, Curt Schilling - a former MLB player, wanted to make a game and started
up a studio. He actually cared and wanted to make a good game. The studio went bankrupt and shut down. A freakin' former MLB player with money and heart and desire can't even make an innovative successful game without loosing money.

IP Stealing and hacking a Microsoft Account are two completely different things. This likely had nothing to do with the guilty party obtaining the kid's email/password to log into his account. If he nabbed the kid's IP address using his computer, and routed
a fake Internet Relay Service call to 9-1-1, then the kid needs to address that with his internet service provider. And authorities should do some more research into backtracing that call. The kid's billing information had nothing at all to do with it.

 

Well the article states "jacked into his live profile" not "stole his IP address. While the rest states that it turned out to be his neighbors, it would not have required much to know the boy's address. And I don't doubt that the victim probably gave
his neighbor the email and password at some time.

I am just wondering if it possible. Now as many times as I have put that question to various computer types I always get "yes...it is possible to just hack into your account without not knowing one either it's email or password"...and yet MS says that is.....you
know.

So I read it wrong: the neighbors had nothing to do with Tyler's Live problem. So we are back at square one: how did someone on Live take billing info from a complete stranger's Live account?
