Installing games to external drive causes other apps/games not to launch?

When installing games to my external drive on my Xbox One X, I’ve found that other apps/games sometimes won’t launch during the installation. It’s like the installation blocks the ability to do anything else, sometimes even blocking the ability to pause
or cancel the installation.

This doesn’t just apply to launching apps/games installed on the external drive, even the main console settings app won’t launch. The drive is a Western Digital My Passport Ultra 2Tb. The drive is USB 3.0 and right now I’m only using ~10% of its capacity,
so I’m sure the drive is compatible and that it’s not an issue of low capacity.

Does anyone have this issue or any suggestions? Thanks.

Yeah, that seems to be the only possible solution right now. That's a bummer, but I can probably live with it.

Personally, I have always found it best to complete any downloads before running any other app and/or game. I know that is not optimal but when I do it that way I don't have any issues.

Have you tried changing the install location to the external drive in the Xbox App on the notebook?

Launch the Xbox App on your notebook
Click your profile icon
Click “Settings”
Select “General”
Under “Game install options” you should see “Change where this app installs games by default”
Select the external drive from drop down menu
Close out the app entirely and then relaunch it

This may cause the Xbox app to recognize that there are games installed on the external drive.

Do other games launch ok ? Also is the game installed on the internal Xbox hard drive or an external hard drive.

If you recently updated your console with the February 2020 update, it has bricked external hard drives world wide and Xbox Support refuses to acknowledge that the last update is causing an issue with external hard drives. No games will download, install,
or launch from external drives since the update. They've known about this for close to a month.
